Today is the Feast of St. Thomas. I love Thomas. I love the exchange in today’s gospel, as well as when he questions Jesus on Maundy Thursday saying, “Lord, we don’t know where you’re going, how can we know the way?” Prompting one of the great answers of Jesus, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

There is a little known indulgence associated with the words of Thomas when the consecrated species are shown to the congregation.

St. Pius X granted a plenary indulgence (subject to the usual conditions) to all who, looking at the Body and Blood of Christ at the consecration, silently say “My Lord and my God." These are the words of St. Thomas in today’s gospel. For Catholics who bow their heads during the Consecration it is a simple way to receive an indulgence.

This is no longer in force as a plenary under the post-Vatican II Manuals of Indulgence. Many of the old indulgences were discontinued at that time.

You might get a partial indulgence for it, but even that is questionable if it’s done during Mass. We do not typically get indulgences for participating in Mass.
If you went to visit Jesus outside of Mass and said it then like I said it might bring a partial.

That’s weird. It’s in my indulgence book which isn’t that old.

What’s the date of your book? The current, correct indulgence book is this one:

There have been a few additions to it involving primarily the Divine Mercy devotion, and Pope Francis has also authorized special plenaries related to the coronavirus epidemic. But nothing like what you describe.

I would note that there are traditional publishers who reprint old books like the Raccolta (the name of the pre-Vatican II indulgence manual) just so people can pray the prayers, but most of the indulgences in them are no longer in force.

Today? I thought it was St. Hyacinth today.
🤔 On the Byzantine calendar, we commemorate St. Thomas twice: on the Second Sunday of Pascha (Low Sunday EF, Divine Mercy Sunday OF) and October 6.

It’s St Thomas on the RC calendar today.
I just came from Mass at a parish named after him and the Mass was for his feast and the whole homily was about him.

Got my St Thomas feast day plenary by visiting the church named for him and reciting one Our Father and the Creed, as provided for any saint feast day in the current Manual of Indulgences.

Oh, yeah. I guess it is out of date. Still a good prayer though. I doubt if I could ever be detached from sin enough to earn a plenary indulgence anyway.

Now that’s no way to think. You only have to have the desire to reject sin and not commit sins. You don’t have to be sinless.
Even if you didn’t quite reach plenary level, you might get 99 percent, or 95 percent.

Think positive, earn all the indulgences you can and give them to the poor souls. I do, and it has helped my spiritual life greatly. Just use the new manual.
