"the few" and "the many"

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

…“Enter through the narrow gate;
for the gate is wide and the road broad that leads to destruction,
and those who enter through it are many.
How narrow the gate and constricted the road that leads to life.
And those who find it are few.”

Yesterday, I posted some reflections on the above verses from Matthew’s Gospel on CAF. On another Catholic Forum I posted the same thread and one reply was: “A few can be multiplied by many”. I asked her to please explain because I wasn’t quite sure what she meant. She hasn’t explained yet, but I’ve continued to ponder her reply, along with the passage from the Gospel of Matthew.

It can give us hope to ponder “the few” who enter the narrow gate and find Life in Jesus, because as they continue to follow Jesus they will, by His Grace, shine with His light in this world “for the many”. In Matthew 28: 19-20, Jesus says:

Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.

Again, Mary is like the gate, that leads us to Jesus, she is the Mother and Model for the Church. “Few” may be sent but they are sent to bring Jesus “to the many”. God so loved the world He gave His Son, born of a woman. Jesus continues to come into the world through Mary, our Mother in grace. He comes to us through the Church, of which Mary is both Mother and example. Jesus wants to come into the lives of all those with whom we live and work, for we are called by our Baptism, to be like Mary, the icon of the Church, bringing Jesus to others.

Mary, Mother of Jesus, Mother of the Church, pray for us.
Mary, Star of the New Evangelization, pray for us that we may bring Jesus to others.
