The Swiss Guard armory has a number of very modern firearms, including submachineguns IIRC.

And someone does indeed make single-shot rolling block rifles in a variey of calibers, here in the USA.

Also don’t forget the Vatican Gendarmerie, the police force of Vatican City (the Swiss Guards are, technically, the armed force of the Holy See).

The Gendarmerie carries the Glock 17, the Beretta M12, and the H&K MP5.

As far as I know, the only gun-related deaths within the Vatican in about 175 years or so was an apparent double-murder and suicide involving two Swiss Guardsmen and the wife of one of them that occured there in 1998. I can’t even find anyone wounded by the police, but those might not make the news. The Vatican has to be a standout in terms of its police using its firearms with an attitude bent solely on self-defense and preservation of life.

How much crime actually occurs, though? If those are the only deaths reported, it makes me think that there’s very little crime- especially considering the population.

Yes, and it is hard to tell how much of the protection of the Vatican is accomplished by Roman or Italian police. Having said that, this is obviously not a trigger-happy police force.
