I was in my Lay Ministry class and our teacher stated that the Last Supper was not the first Mass…

She said that Jesus and the disciples were there to eat the Passover and that was that…

I suppose she is technically correct, but don’t we also think that the Last Supper was the first Mass as well??

Of course that was the first Mass. How is it that people who deny the faith are in charge in parishes? God helps us.

From the Baltimore Catechism:

**365. Who said the first Mass?

**Our divine Savior said the first Mass, at the Last Supper, the night before He died.

I cringe when I see things like this. I pray that you misunderstood your teacher. If she indeed stated that the Last Supper was not the first Mass, then, I beg you, flee from that class, get a catechism (pick up The Lamb’s Supper by Scott Hahn while you’re there), , notify your Pastor, and don’t give up until you find decent orthodox catechesis, if not at your parish, then pray to be led to another.

God bless you!

What sort of a “lay ministry” class is this? Is your teacher even Catholic?

In I Corinthians 11, St. Paul makes it absolutely clear that the words of the Mass come from Christ’s words at the Last Supper, and that “this do in remembrance of Me” is a reference to the Consecration.

Could she not be partially correct?
Was the first Mass started in the Upper Room and accomplished on Calvary?

Calvary is such an integral part of every Mass isn’t it?

Maybe I am way out here but it is a thought in my own head.

You are way out, my friend, logically speaking. Your contention is analogous to saying that game 1 of the World Series is not the World Series because game 7 hasnt been played yet.

Oops maybe I did not express myself clearly enough.
I am not saying that the Last Supper was not the first Mass of course it is. But was the sacrificial aspect of the Holy Mass not accomplished until Calvary?
If not was the sacrificial aspect accomplished during the Last Supper and before the actual event of Calvary?

Your teacher is a moron.

These apostate “catechists” will do anything to teach you contrary to authentic Catholic teaching. When I was a child I was scolded in front of the class and told I was wrong when I said that the Sanctuary was the new Holy of Holies (I took that from my grandmother’s old Latin Mass missal.

Jesus said the first Mass at the Last Supper- if He didn’t then He didn’t change bread and wine into His body and blood.

In the eternal realm, the Last Supper included the sacrifice of Christ on the Cross.
In the historical realm, it did not.

the Last Supper included the Sacrifice of Christ on the Cross because Christ is God who is Eternal. So from Eternity, Christ pours forth grace from His Cross to every time and place, (even within the ‘historical realm’).

So, this is one of the problems with lay ministry. You have lay persons teaching lay persons, and there is a disconnect with ordained persons. Then the lay persons end up teaching a different gospel than that of the Church.

There was a diocese which had a pastoral lay ministry ‘Center’, and they trained many lay persons to be lay leaders and teachers of the faith. And when those lay leaders and teachers had a question, after ‘graduating’ about what to believe and teach, they went back to the Center for their answers. All this occurred apart from the Bishop. It is as if they were setting up a separate magisterium, disconnected from the Pope and the Bishops.

But then a new Bishop took office, and he cut their budget in half. Rather than continue teaching the faith with less money, or for free as volunteers, they shut down the Center. Hired hands.

I think most lay ministry programs are misguided.

Well, this class is part of the diocesan Lay Ministry program. Unfortunately, I think some of the teachers of this 2 year program are quite ‘liberal’ in their opinions.

I am in this course because it is a requirement in the diocese to continue on for deaconate formation, so I have to argue my case in class or bite my lip on some of these things.

I don’t want to make too many waves because then I might be “branded” and my future deaconate career may be sidelined!!!

I think I might do much more good in the long run by going through this stuff, and then unleashing my traditional views later on, if, Lord willing, I do receive Holy Orders…

The Annunciation may very well be the first Mass.

Liturgy of the Word-The angel proclaims that Mary will bear God.
Liturgy of the Eucharist-The Holy Spirit overcomes Mary and behold The Word Made Flesh.

interesting to ponder.

in XT.

Always remember Christ’s words at the Last Supper. To paraphrase, “This is my body which is given for you. This is my blood which is poured out for you.” He said these things, obviously, before Calvary.

The sacrifice, the giving, the pouring out, exists outside of time even as it was made present in time on the cross.
