Well, interesting version of the story. If you ask the Indians down here, they have a different one. In fact, at one point in the last few years they wanted the statue of Onate taken down… since the Spaniards demanded the conversion of any Indians that were left after their annihilation. Not sure that’s Thanksgiving.
On the other hand, I find living down here a joy since a good majority of NM is Hispanic Catholic with strong family ties and community consciousness with a dedication to the poor. There are many Catholic Indians, but there are also many, many reservations down here and in AZ. Their poverty doesn’t bode well and flavors their view of history.

I don’t know about that site. I think it is one of those sites that deny the current pope and Vatican II. I don’t think everything is quite accurate for that site

I think you’re completely correct. That site is relentlessly critical of Pope Benedict, Pope John Paul II, and other recent popes. They accuse Pope Benedict of endorsing homosexuality. They display news pictures of popes and mock them. I would believe nothing of what they say.

The tradition introduced by European Americans of Thanksgiving as a time to focus on God and His blessings dates back well over four centuries in America. For example, such thanksgivings occurred in 1541 at Palo Duro Canyon, Texas with Coronado and 1,500 of his men; 1 in 1564 at St. Augustine, Florida with French Huguenot (Protestant) colonists; 2 in 1598 at El Paso, Texas with Juan de Oñate and his expedition; 3 in 1607 at Cape Henry, Virginia with the landing of the Jamestown settlers; 4 in 1619 at Berkeley Plantation, Virginia; 5 (and many other such celebrations). But it is primarily from the Pilgrim’s Thanksgiving celebration of 1621 that we derive the current tradition of Thanksgiving Day.
