I got spoiled on Han’s death, and who killed him, less than 24 hours before seeing the movie. Ironically, I saw the spoiler in a comment on the official SW Facebook page.

I can’t say though, that I would have been all that surprised even if I had been unspoiled. It’s well known that Harrison Ford wanted Han to be killed off in ROTJ. He finally got his wish for a Star Wars death scene, even if more than 30 years late.

Better than the prequels. Still not that great. Kilo Ren is basically the emo crybaby character inhabited by Anakin in the prequels, but it’s not as insufferable because he gets less screen time and mostly keeps his helmet on. This along with having no gungins or ewoks kept it watchable.
That is true but he is Anakin’s grandson; therefore, it is fitting that he his like him.

I think I’d rather live on Luke’s planet of solitude than on Yoda’s.
I don’t know-think about it-he has to climb those steps EVERY DAY to get the food he needs (fish).

In reality, I read that Mark Hamill almost fell to his death climbing the stairs because they were wet and he slipped and fell.

No need for a Stairmaster on that island, and how hard can fishing be with the Force? Just hold out your hand, and the fish shakes a little bit, and then flies into your waiting grasp!

  1. Was it worth the money?
I thought so.
  1. How does it rate compared to the old and newer films?
I would rate it #3 behind ESB and RotJ (and only “slightly” behind RotJ)
  1. Is all of it CGI or is there some nice real scenery footage?
It “feels” real. It has the sense of depth the originals had. Yes, some use of CGI, but not nearly so flat as the prequels. The final scene was shot at Skellig Michael in Ireland, and is breathtaking (and not just for the final scene reveal).
  1. Is the film actually from a book or a completely new story?
As far as I know, its original. If anything, its taken from the original Star Wars. There are a lot of parallels-not in a “rip-off” sort of way - more like “history repeats itself”. There are some “unanswered questions”, some of which I expect to be answered later (Rey’s parents), and some that I think need to be addressed as it didnt make any sense as shown (R2’s sudden awakening with the map-if they had any inkling it was in there they shouldve just hacked in).
  1. Is it good enough to take other people to see it?
I think so. If you cant find anyone else to go, I sure will go with you.
  1. How long should I wait if I don’t want massive queues?
Today (Saturday) at my plex really wasnt bad. They had it going on six screens; basically every hour near the hour for 2D and near the half-hour for 3D. There were no significant lines out the door and I told my daughter I was surprised the lobby was pretty empty. For popcorn we only had 3 people in front of us (about 30 mins before start). Yet, I’d estimate our screen was about 95% full for a 12:10P showing, so people are coming. I dare wonder if paranoia about lines and tickets fuelled enough advance sales to eliminate the ticket lines.

My theories on events/future movies:
-Rey is a survivor of the massacre that sent Luke into exile, who was hidden away and possibly has suppressed memories. I say this because she advanced a little too quick with the force to have done so without any training.
-Ep 8 will be a bloodbath for Leia and maybe Luke (and other OT characters too). Honestly, Carrie Fischer was tough to watch in this movie (showing her age and mileage a bit too much), and with all the actors being 60+, they need to continue the transition to the next gen. Other actors can hide under the wookie suit and golden plates, so those roles can be easier transitions to new actors, but no real way to transition to a new Luke or Leia. Act 2 of a trilogy is typically dark; so I’m thinking how best to get dark (and darker than Han’s death) is to have Kylo now complete his transition to the dark side with Leia’s death, and probably Luke tranitioning to a Spirit. I envision Luke dying to defeat Snoke.
  • Just based on the size of the hologram, Im guessing Snoke is probably short like Maz (possibly the same race as Maz with a lot of damage) witha Napoleon complex. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s somewhat of a pretender-has some knowledge of the force, but using Sith holocrons and what not to train Kylo. My other thought on Snoke is an attempted clone of Vader or Maul that didnt quite work out.
-Finn and Daisey, sittin in a tree, k i s… Err… Those two develop a romance. Just a bit too much emotional set-up between the two.
-We’ll see the new trilogy equivalents of Thrawn and Mara Jade. Kylo and Rey serm too close to Jacen/Jaina (even if not twin siblings) for there not to be some nods to the EU (excuse me, “Legends”).
  • Please please do not have Finn be Lando’s kid. But I think he’ll find his parents too (he didnt end the movie dead, so obviously will be back).
-One or both of Han’s creditors will be back somehow. That whole sequence wasnt necessary unless one or the other will be back. Han & Chewie could’ve just been laying over on Jakku for repairs and sleeping in the back, when Finn/Rey/BB8 stole the Falcon.

After the first time I saw the movie I was pretty convinced that in the movies that follow, Kylo and Rey would be revealed to be cousins. But after a second viewing I’m not so sure. Something about the way Han and Leia look at her and a comment about him being the father she never had. They could be siblings.

But then I noticed Luke sliiightly tears up at the end when she held out Anakin’s saber to him. I can’t really say he was actually crying. But I noticed his eyes gradually get shiner as he looked at her. She may be his daughter after all.

For the entire movie I could have sworn Luke would have been where today was.

Saw the movie. I thought it fitting that the first spoken words said this will make everything right. It did. I never knew I didn’t like the prequels until I saw this. This is what Star Wars should be.

Outside of ot and the prequels I don’t know too much but I firmly believe Kylo and Rey are bro and sis. They will battle for several movies and Star Wars doesn’t really deal with cousins. Father son /brother sister is the Star Wars way. She has her fathers ship and they will ultimately clash over thier mother…

I think Rey is Han and Leia’s daughter. I think she was taken away right at birth. Just like Leia was from her mother.

For all the technology, this universe doesn’t seem to have the capability of determining whether women are carrying twins or not.

They also don’t have the Maury show. Or cheek swabs… But I guess it was a long time ago…

Why would Luke’s lightsaber call out to her? Why can’t Luke be a father with a daughter? And the flashback showed a young Rey about 7 years old…maybe younger…

Jedi are not Catholic priests… and it’s unlikely Luke know about the “no marriage allowed” of the prequels…which is partially what doomed the Jedi.

Btw, in the now retitled legends expanded universe books, Luke had a son named Ben. And h&l had a son that went dark side. Ben Skywalker didn’t. It would make more sense to me that Luke’s lightsaber would call out to his DAUGHTER than a niece.

Can’t wait for the awesome storyline of the two cousins battling it out…

Though as a homeschooling parent I have insight into the challenges that Luke will have with trying to train his child…
Naw. She is Han’s daughter…

Then why didn’t Han recognize her?

Why didn’t Leia?

She is a little more attuned to the force…strong like Luke.

Or strong like leia. I don’t know, I just know that it makes more sense if it is bro and sis. By the way Luke and his sis and Vader went decades without knowing… Plus there is zero romantic interest for Luke in the movies. Zero… Star Wars doesn’t work like that. They are bro and sis. That is the future main plot. What was a battle between parent and child is now between bro and sis. A tale as old as Cain and Abel. siblings. Not cousins. This isn’t the patty duke show. Disney knows better. Your scenario is more like the prequel storylines. This movie is definitely more traditional.

Who the heck was the old dude who died at the beginning? The one who gave the map to Poe?

Lor San Tekka. He is watching over Rey similar to they way Obi Wan Kenobi was watching over Luke in Ep IV. Tekka is watching and waiting on the day Rey is old enough to receive a map to her Uncle(?)… Na not really, Rey is Luke’s daughter. I think Leia and Han would remember having a daugher. It makes much more sense if Rey is Luke’s love child. Luke’s taken a vow of celibacy just like his father and his father before him but it wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility if he breaks his vow. Think of Rey as the hidden child of a catholic priest and it begins to make more sense as to why she is being hidden on Jakku.

(Devil’s Advocate Post) Ah but the lightsaber isn’t Luke’s and no one in the movie identifies it as HIS. Only that he had it for some time as an heirloom before he built his own according to his own preferences. It’s actually Anakin’s. It makes perfect sense that it can call Luke’s niece just as strongly as Luke’s daughter if what it’s **really **calling out to is Anakin’s granddaughter. Kylo Ren is so beholden to the worst of his grandfather. Maybe Rey is being called by the best.

If anything the falcon called out to her more than the light saber…

Thanks!

I’m not too interested in a storyline where the new vader’s main beef is with his cousin. Not unless they are shooting for a thanksgiving opening and there is some metaphor about sitting at the kids Jedi table…
Siblings fighting is the correct storyline. Civil war, Cain and Abel,my own childhood. Not to many people will resonate with a “you killed my uncle!” Storyline.
As for remembering… I think Luke would remember marital relations
