There were different styles, yes.


So I don’t know of any hard evidence between those styles for example. But a cross in general is fairly certain.
 
So what is the proof that Jesus was crucified on a cross? For argument sake
He was presumably crucified on the type of cross that historians have determined was in general use in Rome-controlled Jerusalem at that time, which I believe looked more like a tau than our traditional cross.
I’ve also read that when the prisoners like Jesus carried their “cross”, they were actually just carrying the cross beam, as the upright was already mounted in the earth on the hill of execution, so all the artwork showing Jesus dragging a complete cross down the street is a little bit in error. I’m sure the crossbeam was heavy enough on its own, especially for someone with many wounds and massive blood loss who had been up for over 24 hours without eating.
