The form of Christ's hand in crucifixes

Hello,

I have noticed this in a lot of Western style crucifixes. The Byzantine icons I see of Christ on the Cross are open handed, but a lot of the Western ones look like this:



Is this intentional? It looks like the hand of blessing, like from Christ Pantocrator from Mt. Sinai.



If it is intentional, what a powerful message. The man who hangs there, murdered by us on the Cross, extends his hand in blessing over us, turning his death into our life.

It is a typical gesture of benediction, and yes, it is definitely intentional. Take a look here.
