I heard Blankenhorn on the radio on Friday and was so impressed that I ordered his book. Best part about this author? He’s a liberal! Can’t wait to read it!

Forty years ago, someone said to me, “How does it hurt you if someone else takes drugs?” I didn’t have a good answer then – but boy, do I have one now!

Forty years ago, someone said to me, “How does it hurt you if someone else has a baby out of wedlock?” I didn’t have a good answer then – but boy, do I have one now!

Now, someone says, “How does it hurt you if someone else has a gay marriage?” My answer is, “It contributes to the horrible disintegration of society that started when you and your ilk were promoting drugs and out-oi-wedlock births some forty years ago.”

The more you conceptualize marriage as about adults and our rights, the more sense same-sex marriage makes. The more you see marriage as a necessary social institution for bringing men and women together to make and raise the next generation, the less sense gay marriage makes.
To me this sums up the underlying problem, and points toward the fact that too many people don’t know what marriage is anymore, and I think that’s because the average person’s concept of marriage has been very warped (or, as some tell it, “has evolved”) because of widespread acceptance of divorce and casual contraception.

The few times I’ve discussed it with “gay marriage” proponents, and asked “What is marriage?”, their answer is basically “Anything I say it is.” And unfortunately I was caught dumbfounded as to how to effectively respond to that. I think now after talking with others here about it and thinking a little, I could more convincingly assert that marriage is more than just a person’s opinion - that it does have some defining non-optional characteristics. But too many people, and too many Catholics are just as dumbfounded as I was on how to respond to this. And I think that’s how the idea has gained so much ground.

I should read the book too!
