is the garden of eden earth? or heaven? or something else?
please help - im a new convert and have got seriously confused when doing personal bible studies…

The church does not address eden as a physical place. See the Catechism which notes there is symbolical, figurative, allegorical language being used in Genesis 1-3 (especially paragraphs 337, 362, 375, 390, 396).
 
I think its a real place the Adam and Eve grew up but was lost in time. Genesis mentions that the Euphrates river and other rivers run through it. So it was probably located around Iraq or so and historians say that the earliest civilizations started around there

Compare the following passages from both the Old and New Testaments:

After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.*
(Genesis 3:24)

He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes, I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.
(Apocalypse 2:7)

12 "Son of man, take up a lament concerning the king of Tyre and say to him: 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says:
" 'You were the model of perfection,
full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.
13 You were in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone adorned you: ruby, topaz and emerald, chrysolite, onyx and jasper, sapphire, turquoise and beryl. Your settings and mountings were made of gold; on the day you were created they were prepared. 14 You were anointed as a guardian cherub, for so I ordained you. You were on the holy mount of God; you walked among the fiery stones.

The Tree of Life is located in the Garden of Eden, also known as Paradise; Paradise is with God, perhaps as the New Jerusalem…
