The gates of hell shall not prevail against WHO?

“And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” Matthew 16:18

I am not disputing about Peter’s role but the last phrase: “the gates of hell shall not prevail against it”

The Catholic Church has been standing there for 2000 years and it will stand there until the end of times, there is no doubt about this since the Lord himself who wills it.

What about other churches?

Can we say that the gates of hell have prevailed against the continuously divided protestant denominations since Martin Luther?

Or, is there any protestant denominations that have been closing down since its founding?
I am wondering, in real world scenario, what effect a church will suffer as a result of the gates of hell prevail against it.

The Anglican is splitting because of the homosexual ordinations but the church itself is still standing.
The Catholic church suffered many scandals and corruptions in the past but it’s still standing.

Or maybe the gates of hell will not prevail also against all protestant denominations until the end of times?
 
Not against a WHO, a what the universal spiritual church that is with Christ that is beyond any Earthly denomination whether Roman Catholic or Protestant. Jesus was praising the faith of Peter that is the Rock.

The pronoun “it” in the verse refers to its antecedent “church.”
Jesus meant the gates of hell shall not prevail against His Church, which is the Roman Catholic Church, with the papacy (St. Peter as the the first pope) leading it. God bless you!🙂

I understand it to be The Catholic Church and all believers. Although the devil has been
successful in splintering the church, populating it with “black clergy” to destroy it from within, he has not been able to destroy it in 2000 years. The Catholic Church still stands because Jesus said that He will always be with it. And He keeps His word!

Every protestant church I have been in has broken and split, changed or closed in the last 20 yrs. Even the ones that are sort of “international” denominations continue to VOTE every year on which doctrines they want to continue to believe and uphold. It is the fractured nature of protestantism.

Absolutely, this scripture is in reference to the Catholic Church. The gates of hell will not prevail against **it. **It will remain steadfast until Jesus comes again in glory to judge the living and the dead.

The gates of hell are the machinations and power of Satan and his horde in trying to destroy Jesus’ Church. Although he has done damage to it because of man’s lust for power, etc., he will never succede because Jesus said so.

We look around at the ELCA Lutherans voting to ordain actively open homosexuals and women, the Anglicans split into smithereens over everything from soup to nuts, Methodists are feel-good quasi-Anglicans with not even a claim to apostolic succession, presbyterians are very very liberal now, denominations split into infinity and no one stands for anything anymore. The Rock of the Catholic Church is the foundation and the walls of safety for truth. I’ve re-discovered this more than ever lately. Your post is well-stated. God bless.

What do the GATES of hell do?

You cannot make things up to suit you misguided theology.

Many of the churches throughout the region of Galatia were overthrown by false doctrine.

Where today is the Corinthian church? They died out, and were overthrown by worldliness.

Are these churches still in existence? What about the church at laodicea?

Now you are nit picking and playing with semantics. If you do not understand what is meant by “the gates of hell” then pray to the Holy Spirit for enlightment in understanding scripture ( and not itnterpreting it ).

You say this is not true. Please read Matthew 16:18-19. If Jesus gave Peter the authority to act in His name and, according to you, it was not passed on to Peter’s successors, then why did He bother to found a Church or even bother to give Peter this authority to act in His name? As I’m sure you would say, it doesn’t make sense.

Well, well, Hisalone, you’re obviously here in a moment of providence to enlighten we “misguided” Catholics. I’m not clear to which denomination or creed you belong? In any case, the gates of hell are Satan himself who mxes lies with the truth. The gates of hell are the errors of heresy, the infiltration of sinful teachings that are full of lies. The gates of hell are immoral theology and morality. The Catholic Church possesses none of these things. Thanks to the charism of the Holy Spirit protecting Mother Church, the RCC possesses an infallible guide in the papacy. Not only is the Catholic Church infallible in theology but morally speaking the Church is the premiere warrior against the moral relativist tripe and vague spirituality that we see so commonly on here. It is the Catholic Church fighting the evils of abortion, homosexual “marriage,” trial marriages/cohabitation, divorce and remarriage, medically unethical items like fetal stem cell research and in vitro fertilization, sticking up for the elderly and inferm, fighting atheism and apathy, and striving to rebuild a morally-depraved culture. Catholicism has had many bouts with the Gates of Hell. If you can’t see the gates, that gives a clue into your spirituality…

I fail to see your point? The churches in the Middle East were largely wiped out by Islam. What’s the point? Some churches fell into sin and heresy. Many became gnostics, some pelagians, some docetists, some montanists, some Arians. What’s your point? Many have fallen into sin and have fallen off the bus of the Church throughout the last 2,000 years. Are you implying that since some have fallen into heresy or apostacy that somehow that means the overall Catholic Universal Church that Christ built on Peter is also a thing of the past, destroyed and irrelevent as well? No one ever said that people within the Church will not go down a dark path or that some churches within the Catholic Church will not travel down the way to heresy? But the ship of the Catholic Church, the Church guided by the papacy is still sailing. Some crewmen have jumped off, and Satan’s pirates have done some damage at times, but the ship still sails. And it drives some people nuts! 👍

Many thanks gurneyhalleck. Two great posts. If they don’t understand and see the gates of hell now, then maybe they have been overwhelmed by those gates. Satan always uses unknowing and unsuspecting people to attack Jesus’ Church. This seems to be a good example. God Bless.

Now I understand the effect of being prevailed by the gates of hell. I will explain this to my protestant brethrens.

Your “it” explanation is correct but the protestants will always say that “it” represents the whole body of believers, which is illogical.
