The gates of hell will not prevail

I heard Curtis Martin (the minister, not the running back) say that “the gates of hell will not prevail” was actually a poor translation, and that “the gates of hell will not withstand” is a better translation.

But I just don’t think I understand. Can anyone help?

And if you’ve never heard Mr. Martin speak, add it to your to-do list.

Hi Mark,

The fundamental meaning of** katiskuô** is “to be strong against”. So, in principle, it can mean “to prevail” as well as “to resist” (withstand). I note that my French Jerusalem bible has also opted for “withstand”. In one case the devil is the fighter; in the other the Church is the fighter. In both cases the Church wins. So there is really no cause to worry, is there?

Have you asked the running back what he thought?

BTW, do you have any audio files of his. I’ve read his books, but never heard him. If I recall correctly, he was a little too deep for me at the time. I need to read them again.
