Those who oppose gay ‘marriages’ will be deemed intolerant, similar to anti Semites and racists.

This is the crux of the issue. How would Catholics counter this labeling?

Love is not tolerance

BISHOP FULTON J. SHEEN****Christian love bears evil, but it does not tolerate it.

Code:
http://www.catholiceducation.org/images/authos/Sheen8.JPG *Christian love bears evil, but it does not tolerate it. *
It does penance for the sins of others, but it is not broadminded about sin.
*The cry for tolerance never induces it to quench its hatred of the evil philosophies that have entered into contest with the Truth. *
It forgives the sinner, and it hates the sin; it is unmerciful to the error in his mind.
*The sinner it will always take back into the bosom of the Mystical Body;
but his lie will never be taken into the treasury of His Wisdom. *
*Real love involves real hatred:
whoever has lost the power of moral indignation and the urge to drive the buyers and sellers from the temples
has also lost a living, fervent love of Truth. *
*Charity, then, is not a mild philosophy of “live and let live”;
it is not a species of sloppy sentiment. *
Charity is the infusion of the Spirit of God,
which makes us love the beautiful and hate the morally ugly.

All people should be intolerant of that which causes people harm, especially harm to their eternal souls.

By acting and speaking with love and intelligence. By explaining what the Church teaches and why with precision and highlighting how it is different from the view that “being gay is a sin” and different than the mindless cultural “ew homosexuality is gross except for lesbians” attitude. I think we should stand against homophobia and language that demeans gay people. And I think being consistent with our logic - also speaking out against premarital sex, adultery, contraception and divorce - may also help illustrate that this isn’t about the Church having something against any particular group of people.

I think Catholics should also be careful not to present our own views as official Church doctrine. For example, sometimes people take a position on what causes gay attraction (genetics, the environment, etc) and act as though their view on the scientific question is somehow a necessary precondition for the Church’s moral teaching.

I am intolerant of gay ‘marriage.’ Deeply, profoundly intolerant, just as I am of abortion and euthanasia or violence against women and little kids smoking crack. But if gay ideologues and their thuggish, sycophantic thought police want to compare my intolerance here to the intolerance that antisemites have toward the Jewish people or that racists have toward people who are not of their race, let them. These are ideologues, not persons looking for rational discourse on the issue; nothing that I say will convince them that I am not some evil, vicious, blood-drinking second coming of Hitler for having the gall to remain a faithful Catholic on this point and the nerve to speak my mind.

I just don’t lose sleep over it. I am not adverse to being seen as a rebel or ‘bad boy’ in my culture.

We should expect nothing less, and we should respond prayerfully and truthfully. We must always speak the truth and share it in a spirit of Christian charity.

Saying that anyone who calls homosexual sex a sin is being intollerant is just another form of politically correct verbal engineering. The goal of which, is to make the truth a lie and a lie the truth.

There is really no relationship between anti-Semitism and those who oppose gay “marriage”. One is a religious choice the other is a non-religious choice. Ask a holocaust survivor whether gay rights and religious freedom are related - they’d be offended at the mere suggestion of it.

Likewise there is no relationship between racism and those who oppose gay “marriage”. One is a genetic expression of a skin gene and the other is not; it is a lifestyle choice. Ask any African American, for example, whether gay rights and racism are related - they’d be offended at the mere suggestion of it.

Ultimately the disagreement is upon what the definition of marriage is. Those advocating gay marriage have a novel interpretation of what constitues a marriage; those in opposition to it have the original, historical, logical, and biological interpretation of what marriage is.
