The Geneva Bible - its translation

The Geneva Bible was an English translation and set of study notes done by English speaking Puritans in exile in Geneva, Switzerland. It is considered by some to be the first “Study Bible”. It was very controversial in its time, and the notes stated, in no uncertain terms, that the Beast of Rev 13 was led by the Pope.

How good is the translation itself? While it has not been used much in the past 300 years (it lost out to the KJV in most Protestant circles within a hundred years of its publication), it is considered by many Protestants to be a good translation and acceptable for use.

Are there any passages that are especially problematic or are there clear signs of Protestant or Puritan bias in the translation itself (not the notes)?

The Geneva Bible was the Bible of the Pilgrims. It was not one that any royalty liked because it questioned the concept that kings ruled by divine right. Thus it was outlawed in England and replaced by the “Authorized Version” otherwise known as the King James Version. The KJV was the reason the Pilgrims left England and after a brief time in the Netherlands, came to North America.
