I just got back from seeing this film, on the recommendation of a local pro-life attorney. I wasn’t sure what to think at first. The drab black-and-white world was full of people with strange mannerisms. But as Jonas learned from The Giver what it meant to be human, everything changed. I was deeply impressed by the pro-life message and now I’m going to go read the book.

My daughter had to read the book for school. Other than that, I’m not familiar with it. We might see it at some point, although my wife and kids lean away from dramas.

I loved the book. it was the only school assigned book I actually read all the way through. I haven’t seen the movie yet, and honestly was a bit nervous to.

It sounds like the movie did a fairly good job retelling the story.

My kids had to read it for school as middle schoolers.
I hated the book, and did not get a Pro-life vibe from it at all.
I’m astounded. The book/storyline was pretty grim.
But the Diocese is touting it as having a big pro-life message…who knew?🤷

I have not watched the movie yet but I loved the book. It was thought provoking and I did feel like it had a pro-life message. It’s been a while since I have read it though. My sister was reading when she was in elementary school and I decided to read it too.

I read the book and thought it said much about how we can be when we are narrow minded, till one learns the truth, not everything we see is what it seems to be when narrow mindless is the norm. Sometimes it seems one will go with what is told till one day one sees something different and begins to question it as it was done in the Book The Giver.

Odeya Rush, who played Fiona in this film, is slated to star as the Blessed Virgin Mary in Mary, Mother of Christ, billed as a prequel to The Passion of the Christ - but with Joel Osteen at the helm rather than Mel Gibson.

The Giver is one of my favorite YA novels. I’ll be looking forward to seeing this.

It retells the story. The characters are aged up from 12 to 16, the Fiona-Jonas romance is fleshed out, and the Chief Elder is a bit more actively antagonistic. But everything seemed like fair changes to make a movie out of something that was more of a character piece in the first place.

Father Z’s blog: REVIEW: The Giver
As I watched, I suspected I was both missing things (since it is an adaptation of a book which I had never heard of, much less read) and getting things. There isn’t any question that this movie exalts human life lived, in contrast to imposed uniformity through technological domination. Think Brave New World meets Logan’s Run. Even my comparisons date me: I am not the target demographic for this movie. Then again, I am not the target for Guardians of the Galaxy, which I had never heard of either, but I thought that was a hoot.
Some spoilers in the comments section.

I’ll be surprised if this movie turns out to be anything but sappy, with Mr. Osteen at the helm. I like the guy, but to me he is a motivational speaker and not a preacher. He rarely says anything mildly controversial. Rob

Read the book many years ago, just saw the movie today.
Loved the book then, loved the movie now!
The main things I remembered from the book were in the movie.
Now I want to read the book again.

Last year I heard people blasting the book on Catholic Radio. It was clear to me they had only read the first few chapters of the book. This is when Jonas thinks he lives in a Utopia. I wanted to call in and say that there was a pro life message at the end but it was the end of the hour on the show. Also when I heard this on the radio it had been a while since I read the book so I had to stop to think what I would say that took the five minutes or so I would have had

To pianistclare the pro life message is that in that society anyone who was “perfect” didn’t get to live. I forget what they called it but they glorified euthanasia. Jonas’ father killed imperfect babies. Jonas became horrified of that.
