I am not a fan of the children’s book “The Giving Tree” but as an inspiration for a pop song it is really good.

Has anyone heard this song? I love it. It is sad and beautiful. I highly recommend it for a secular song.

You’re not a fan of The Giving Tree? My gosh man, from whence do you come? I bawled my eyes out from reading that book.

I also cried! Perhaps, I should read it again though. Maybe I missed some hidden indoctrination as a child lol jk

The Giving Tree just made me sad. And mad at that evil little boymanteenager.

…and thanks for hijacking the thread to talk about a book written by a guy who wrote for a porn magazine.

If y’all get around to listening to the song, its good. At least I thought so.

Well, I just listened to it and I liked it, bittersweet, but I liked it. Never read the “Giving Tree” but I got the gist of the story by reading the comments and listening to the song.

Here is the song for those of you who haven’t yet heard it:

The book that the song is based on is irrelevant, but the author’s other works that have nothing to do with the book are relevant?

Is this making sense to anyone else?

Shel Silverstein is relevant if you like his works. Shel Silverstein wrote for a porn mag. So, if you like Shel Silverstein’s work, you have to overlook his moral composition.

Sort of like those who like South Park and overlook its hatred of Catholicism.

The Giving Tree is a tale about - wait for it- unfettered capitalism and materialism. It is a political book dressed up as a nice little child’s tale. I loathe any attempt to brainwash children.

What the band did was take that book and make a nice song about love. It works as a song, not so much as a children’s book. Note- my opinion only.

A blind pig finds an acorn once in a while. Hitler probably wrote something at one time that wasn’t hate-filled and bigoted. But that doesn’t mean we should overlook Mein Kampf.

You can’t dissociate an author from his works and actions. That was all I was trying to say.

I thought the song was nice. The song is about love, while the book pretends to be about love. Silverstein’s writings are very much political statements geared toward children.

Makes sense to me.
