To understand it, look at Congressmen’s financial statements and campaign statements. They make money themselves off crop subsidies. My congressman, Marion Berry (D, Ark) makes about 10 times as much off subsidies as from his congressional salary. Since I brought this out in '04 when I ran against him, he has broken his holdings into “companies” and “partnerships” to hide it.I have never understood the subsidies paid for rice or cotton in Missouri, since this the northernmost part of their range and they often are wiped out by weather. Crop insurance, of course, pays for that. Nor do I understand tobacco subsidies anywhere. But they’re paid too.
And of course, agribusiness contributes to their campaigns.
