I absolutely love the Gloria prayer recited at Mass and was wondering if we as lay people are also allowed to pray it at home, or is it reserved exclusively for Mass?

Many thanks.

Gloria in excelsis Deo
et in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntatis.
Laudamus te,
benedicimus te,
adoramus te,
glorificamus te,
gratias agimus tibi propter magnam gloriam tuam,
Domine Deus, Rex caelestis,
Deus Pater omnipotens.

Domine Fili unigenite, Iesu Christe,
Domine Deus, Agnus Dei, Filius Patris,
qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis;
qui tollis peccata mundi, suscipe deprecationem nostram.
Qui sedes ad dexteram Patris, miserere nobis.

Quoniam tu solus Sanctus, tu solus Dominus, tu solus Altissimus,
Iesu Christe, cum Sancto Spiritu: in gloria Dei Patris. Amen.

The Gloria would make a wonderful morning prayer! Thanks for the idea. Never know where Holy Inspiration will come from !

Psst… Don’t tell anyone, but the Gloria is part of Matins in the Byzantine Tradition, even for Passion Matins on Holy Thursday evening/Great Friday morning (vs the Latin Church which drops the Gloria for all of Lent). 😆

If you like the Gloria, you’ll love the Te Deum!

The Te Deum is part of the Office of Readings and it is sung on Sundays and solemnities, that is, on days when the Gloria would be included with Mass.

The Office of Readings and the rest of the Liturgy of the Hours is especially suited to solitary recitation, such as by a priest in his rectory, or a layman at home!

or is it reserved exclusively for Mass?
It was originally not part of the Mass, but of the Lauds or Prime service said by monks during the early Middle Ages. Since Mass followed immediately after Prime in the main monastery in Constantinople at one time, the line between the two became blurred and the Gloria eventually jumped ship to become part of the Mass in the West.

You are free to pray it at home if you want,
