fine, Muhammad was a pagan who adopted the Christian heretical teachings widespread in Arabia and developped them into a book and called his religion Islam.

We are not called to hate other religions. We are not called to pour out bile and vituperation on them. We are called to treat them with respect and set an example by which they may come to see the truth.

we are not to hate other **people **who have different religions. But we are not called to respect a “different Gospel” that Jesus did not teach, don’t you agree? do you agree that you can’t respect a gospel that says Jesus was not crucified for example?

So we are to hate the Jews, too? They don’t believe Jesus was the Messiah.
841 The Church’s relationship with the Muslims. "The plan of salvation also includes those who acknowledge the Creator, in the first place amongst whom are the Muslims; these profess to hold the faith of Abraham, and together with us they adore the one, merciful God, mankind’s judge on the last day
I don’t see anything in there that tells me to go out and tell my neighbor his wife is ugly, or his children retarded.

i highlighted the keyword for you in my previous post. We are not to hate **PEOPLE **who have different belief but we are not to respect a book that teaches heresies.

As I pointed out earlier, the Muslims, having never been baptized, cannot by definition be heretics. They can be – and are – in error, but they cannot be charged with heresy.

We are not called to pour vituperation on them – even with the flimsy excuse that we “love Muslims but hate the Koran.” If you want to see someone who treats Catholics that way, go to Jack Chick’s website.

The difference is that Jack Chick is deliberately setting up a strawman version of Catholic teaching. He would not be able to get away with the comments he makes without doing that first. If some of the things he said were actually true, he wouldn’t really be doing anything wrong by mentioning them.

Is your version of Islam any more accurate than Jack Chick’s version of Catholicism?

How do you know?

You are talking about other religionS here in plural form, but you primarily teach that we should respect Muslims, why is that? Is Islam the only non-Christian religion in the world? 😉

Besides, respecting people and believing the way they do are two different things. Muslims claim to respect and love Christians, but it is also apparent that they hate Christianity and the Bible. Actually, it is their Scripture that labels all Christians as infidels for calling Jesus the Son of God! 🙂

Your personal comments differ from the apostolic teaching of the Church:

Galatians 1: 8-9. But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach a gospel to you besides that which we have preached to you, let him be anathema. As we said before, so now I say again: If any one preach to you a gospel, besides that which you have received, let him be anathema.

Finally, back to the main topic of this thread: even if I respected Islam and Muslims, that would never prove that Islam is based on Abrahamic faith 😃

Peace to you,
Angelos

Catholic Doctrine is established by the Magisterium – the teaching of the Catholic Bishops – is it different in your church?

Angelos wrote:
In my Church the Holy Synod decides in accordance with the apostolic tradition and the Holy Scripture. Thus, they never make the mistake of calling a false prophet the owner and promoter of Abrahamic faith! Further, the current Pope seems to be unaware of this article in the Catechism because He infuriated most of the Muslim population by criticizing Islam’s prophet. 😃

So it is a positive virtue to teach error?😉

Angelos wrote:
No comment! But that particular article of the Catechism answers your question!

Vern wrote:
Nonsense!

Read the Catechism – we respect Jews and Muslims because they seek to understand the truth, however imprefectly.

Angelos wrote:
Nonsense! How is it possible to respect Muslims because they seek to understand the truth while they do not have the truth? They deprive themselves of the truth by denying the authenticity of the Bible and Apostolic teaching! They have no truth to understand!

In point of fact, some heritics did claim special revelation – the Gnostics and Montanists, for example.
Hi Vern,

I would like to know more about those heretics please. Who was their prophet or savior instead of Jesus? Whom did they claim to receive that special revelation from? What was their book called? Did they teach that the Bible was corrupt?

Peace to you,
Angelos

If the teachings found in the Quran and hadiths are not the “correct” version of Islam, then what is?
You are as qualified to interpret Islam based on the Quran and hadiths as a Muslim is qualified to interret Christianity based on the Gospels and Epistles.

Now go and see what a pig’s breakfast Muslims make in their interpretation of Christianity, and understand that your interpretation of their religion is just as far off the mark.

No, we can’t hate other religions, but dislike them and feel sorry for them. I’m sorry but I cannot respect anyone who kills Christians in the name of their God. Do they respect and like us? No they don’t. Christians are so hated all over the world, especially The Catholics.
I trust in God, that we will prevail in the end, just like He said.
If your child was beheaded for no reason, or killed in the name of some other God, would you still respect them?? I think not.

An excellent point and one that will be ignored by pretty much everyone who has something to say about someone else’s religion.

Gnosticism (1st and 2nd Centuries)

“Matter is evil!” was the cry of the Gnostics. This idea was borrowed from certain Greek philosophers. It stood against Catholic teaching, not only because it contradicts Genesis 1:31 (“And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good”) and other scriptures, but because it denies the Incarnation. If matter is evil, then Jesus Christ could not be true God and true man, for Christ is in no way evil. Thus many Gnostics denied the Incarnation, claiming that Christ only appeared to be a man, but that his humanity was an illusion. Some Gnostics, recognizing that the Old Testament taught that God created matter, claimed that the God of the Jews was an evil deity who was distinct from the New Testament God of Jesus Christ. They also proposed belief in many divine beings, known as “aeons,” who mediated between man and the ultimate, unreachable God. The lowest of these aeons, the one who had contact with men, was supposed to be Jesus Christ.

Montanism (Late 2nd Century)

Montanus began his career innocently enough through preaching a return to penance and fervor. His movement also emphasized the continuance of miraculous gifts, such as speaking in tongues and prophecy. However, he also claimed that his teachings were above those of the Church, and soon he began to teach Christ’s imminent return in his home town in Phrygia. There were also statements that Montanus himself either was, or at least specially spoke for, the Paraclete that Jesus had promised would come (in reality, the Holy Spirit).

Note that the New Testament did not emerge until the late 4th Century – so neither Gnostics nor Montanists had any bible other than the Old Testament. They did have a large collection of forged and heavily edited “gospels.”

But it’s so much easier to sit and cluck over someone else’s shortcomings than it is to examine our own sins.

Are we not like the Pharasee in the parable, loudly thanking God that he was not like that publican over there?😃

And just whose interpretation do you suggest we listen to instead??

You conveniently leave out the fact that while it is the teaching of Christianity that there is an authority on interpretation, Islam has no such beliefs. If they do, then again please tell us who has this authority…

Ah, you certainly are a rare breed. A true catholic still exists. I though the last of them died out with Jean Paul II:(
