Fr. Joseph Chalmers, O.Carm.
to the Carmelite Family** This is not a short document, but not too lengthy…and very much worth a read, perhaps broken up for spiritual reading. Though it is written for Carmelites, the wisdom in it of course is universal to monastic or lay person. Dotted throughout the whole Letter are wonderful gems of insight into spirituality - and at times suddenly and unexpectedly reaching out to one. The topics covered are:

A way to prayerfully read, is to begin with a prayer and then if anything does really strike you as you read, to then pause with a very short aspiration or prayer in your own words and try to internalize what has struck you: understand and grasp the meaning. If I am really unable to do this after a few minutes or so, I simply read on in the text. I must confess that I am prone to writing in those books I do buy for spiritual reading as I usually read them again - and sometimes a few times over a span of years…or I may read an online text/book. If I transfer an online text into Word and then file it in My Documents … then I can make notes to my heart’s content.👍 And easy to refind if I wish to read the book or text again.

and to comment on your post. For anyone who is wondering - it works. I just kinda stumbled across it when I was a Baptist (among a couple other things I discovered was ‘Catholic’ 😃 )

I really, really enjoy reading Scripture in this manner. Very fulfilling and enlightening. Who better to teach you what Scripture really means than the Person who wrote it?
