Does anyone else see this column in your weekend newspaper that pairs a Catholic priest and a Jewish rabbi together to answer people’s questions about faith and such? I have taken issue to so many of their answers. This week takes the cake. A distraught (Methodist) mother of a teenager wrote that her daughter’s good friend, a Mormon, has been taking her daughter to their church with her family (in secret) and that missionaries have been “working with her.” The daughter now wants to become a Mormon and feels that everything her parents say to her about faith is untrue. They are Christians that believe in the Bible and don’t know what to do. Here is the “God Squad”'s answer:

“We love Mormons and the Mormon Church. The church’s required year of service for young people is by far the most impressive spiritual youth activity we’ve ever seen. We’re also extremely sensitive to the prejudice directed against many smaller religions (although Mormonism and Islam are the fastest-growing religions in America). Mormons are Christians and they are part of the community of faith that helps the world heal itself from sin.”

Now I have nothing against anyone who is a Mormon… we are called to love our neighbor and all that. But if my Catholic child was considering leaving the Catholic Church to become a mormon, and I went to my priest and he said “I love the Mormon Church! Let her go!!” I would start looking for a new parish immediately. Does Fr. Tom know ANYTHING about Mormon theology??? They believe that God the Father is god of THIS universe, but that their are infinite numbers of universes out there with other Gods. AND… Mormon men in good standing when they die go on to heaven to prepare themselves for BECOMING A GOD OF A UNIVERSE THEMSELVES!!! I’m not making this up. The missionaries do not volunteer this info up front, but if you do your homework and ask them about it, they can’t deny it.

I just dashed off a strongly-worded e-mail to the God Squad. My conscience really bothered me… I had to say something! They represent the Church to many unchurched people around the country, and now many will think the Catholic Church thinks it’s just peachy to let your kids go off to become Mormons because it’s all the same and besides, they have great youth programs! I am livid! I have nothing against Mormons… let me be clear… if you’re a Mormon reading this… peace be with you! But if you want to engage me in a discussion of faith, be prepared that it will not be one-sided… I will have a defense for my beliefs. I welcomed two fine young Mormon missionaries into my home for discussion, but they didn’t bargain for someone who knew her faith! After 3 sessions, they never returned. Anyway… it’s a free country… be Mormon if you want to! But if you are a member of the Catholic Clergy and you vowed your life to serve the Church, you do not encourage parents to just let their kids leave their faith behind. That’s what bugs me. Leading people astray, away from the grace of the eucharist and the sacraments, is like depriving a starving man of food.
