I checked out Amazon’s review of this series. Many of the reviews confirm what has been said about the last book. I haven’t looked at them either but have been curious.

As I recall from my reading of the books, it’s in the third book where the true anti-Christian bias of the author becomes apparent. The series gets worse as it goes on. It’s been a couple years since I’ve read them, and my perspective on things has changed in those years.

Bob, I have read the Harry Potter series and The Golden Compass and its sequels. I really like the Harry Potter series. All the objections pointed out about The Golden Compass are definitely accurate. This is no Harry Potter; this isn’t innocent fantasy. This is fantasy with a dark purpose, which is unfortunate.
 
I am astounded at the bitterness of the attacks on God in this decade. Things are so much worse than they were just 20 years ago. And now this movie to convert children to atheism…well, we must keep praying…but I wonder how things will turn out…

NEWBETX The core of the problem is: children will watch the Golden Campass then ask their parents to by them the trillogy books. The trillogy books can harm children. The third book kills God. The movie is based of the first book in the trillogy. I heard its not really anti Christian not sure, but the 2nd and 3rd books are, and the 2nd and 3rd books get progressively worse, unti God is killed. All this could happen with parents being clueless.
 
His Dark Materials begins in Oxford, although a different version than the one that actually exists. However, Pullman’s familiarity with Oxford and England in general is obvious in the books, which cover a great deal of territory in space, time, and other universes. The books are considered controversial because they speak out very emphatically against many of the teachings of the Christian Church and even suggest an ultimate overthrow of God himself. In addition, the books contain mature content that some parents think is not appropriate for children. Despite this, the series has won numerous prizes.
Philip Pullman has entered public debate over Christianity and the role of the Church, speaking very critically of another popular children’s series, The Chronicles of Narnia. Pullman argues that The Chronicles of Narnia is merely a tool for Christian propaganda** and that the books are oppressive and harmful to children**.

One concern I have is that if the books are meant for a more mature audience and the movie is geared at kids than parents will buy the books based on the movie thinking that the books will be just as kid friendly as the movie.

I have a seven yr old and have already decided that at this point we will not see the movie or get the books. I will wait until she is at a more appropriate age. Then if we do read them, I will make sure that we do so in light of other more Christian friendly fantasy books. Like LOTR, Potter, and Narnia. Amazon has the books listed for 13 and up. Does anyone know the rating of the movie?
 
why has OP started several threads on the same topic on different forums, against forum rules? don’t you think it would be much more productive to a)participate in one of the existing threads on the topic or b) post ONE thread on the proper forum and c) obey forum rules

Please do not buy these books. Check them out of the library so that more money doesn’t go into Pullman’s pocket.

Don’t worry, I have no intention of buying his books. I’m sure if God wants me to read them I will be presented with a situation where I will be able to read them. 😉

He just presented me with an opportunity to read one of the books in the “Left Behind” series. I have been curious about the books but did not want to buy any of them. A friend of mine has started reading them and told me that I “have to check this book out”. She intends to loan me her copy.

For the record I have read David Currie’s “Rapture” and I’m currently reading Desmond Birch’s book “Trial”.

I read a couple of the Left Behind Books. Interesting but not great writing.

My son was ASSIGNED to read this book in 7th grade. I recall controversial book assinments when I was in High School. What I am trying to discern, is if I need to go to the teacher/principal to find out what they are thinking, here… Worth the trip, but I need to be more knowledgable about the book, first.

Since son is finished reading it, I could start, but that could take months to finish.
 
I’d like to know what others think about the movie “The Golden Compass”? I know that Phillip Pullman, the author and director of this movie is an Atheist. In an interview with the Sydney Morning Herald on Dec. 13, 2003, he says “The people who complain that Harry Potter promotes Satanism or witchcraft obviously haven’t got enough in their lives. Meanwhile, I’ve been flying under the radar, saying things that are far more subversive than anything poor old Harry has said. MY BOOKS ARE ABOUT KILLING GOD.”
How can one even say something like this and still try and promote this movie?? Please do not see this movie, nor allow your children to see it. :eek:

It’s just fantasy, I mean have you ever watched a slasher flick? It doesn’t mean you condone serial murder or anything. I think intelligent people can watch the Golden Compass and still retain their faith. I don’t think it’s a big deal, i like fantasy movies like that and I’ll probably check it out.
