According to huffingtonpost, there is a new document that was discovered suggesting that Jesus was married.

Gospel of Jesus wife discovered

I’m not sure where Christians stand on Jesus being married or single, but judging by the article, it sounds to alarmistic too me. Even if Christ was married, that still doesn’t hinder his teachings nor resurrection.

Thoughts?
No disrespect intended, but your first mistake was going on the Huffington Post to begin with.🤷

I read about this in the NY Times today… I thought it was kind of interesting, but the fragment is so small I don’t think we can read into it too much. It doesn’t really matter to me whether He was married or not, it doesn’t detract from His teachings one way or another.

It will be funny to hear athiests/agnostics/gnostics promoting this theory. Even though this papyrus was written possibly in the fourth century. The reason it’ll be funny is that many MANY atheists refute the New Testament is because, as they argue, written down a couple of centuries after Christ.

In my opinion, the same can be said of this papyrus. They can’t have it both ways. And I’m saying this as a former agnostic.

Professor King is correct in noting that the Bible passes over the topic in silence. Culturally, to not be married at that time would have been considered by many to be a violation of the commandment to “be fruitful and multiply,” although there is also some evidence of the practice of celibacy at Jesus’ time.

The truth is that we just don’t know. But you’re right–I don’t think it changes anything one way or the other.

In my view any academic theologian willing to have her name listed as a consultant to the movie “The Da Vinci” code can be ignored without comment. If that isn’t enough for you, review the works she has had published.

As to the “document,” go out and bury a copy of “Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter” in your backyard and make sure family knows where it is buried. A couple thousand years from now one of your [insert a lot of greats] grandkids will be able to sell it as a historical document on old Abe’s career before getting elected.

i think this is probably another on of those aprochal writings. now i didn’t read the whole article but wht is the holy fathers opinion on this what ever he believes i believe.

From the conclusion of King’s paper:
Although the earliest witnesses are silent about whether Jesus married or not, that silence has proven pregnant with possibility for other voices to enter in and fill up its empty void with imagination—and controversy.

I guess this is what qualifies as a “saucy” conclusion in divinity school. The earliest sources are also silent about what help, if any, the builders of stonehenge received from space aliens, but we should be open to voices that might fill the void:

Reading stuff on HuffPo about Christianity is pointless. The stuff on there are devoid of anything intellectual.

Professor King is a woman with an agenda. Note her stated interest in Gnosticism. I think she was also promoting a “gospel of Mary Magdalene” or something similar. I heard her speak in my former life as a Protestant and clearly she chafes against restrictions on female ‘priests.’

I think this is just another silly diversion. As many have said…when you read HuffPo you know they are biased. Ariana is the poster child for He*l hath no fury like a woman scorned…

Jesus was married, Jesus despised religion, Jesus “chickened out” and someone else took His place on the cross, the “parallels” between Jesus and Osiris, Horus and an Indian god/demigod. With the latter, he was shot in the ankle by an arrow, so you can see how this and Christ dying on the cross are actually “similar.”

All as truthful as the Gospel of Judas.
What a yawn, we have heard it all before, Satan is busy again, nice try wont work.

I can’t wait for Nancy Pelosi’s insights. She is an authority on issues related to Jesus.

Wow! This thread has already generated a heated discussion. Good job folks. Really, I mean it. It’s great that we all have the same mindset on this. 🙂
You are a Christian, per your profile. Not to be flip, but how could you not know?
Hey-- I’m rediscovering my faith as time goes on. I was pretty sure Jesus wasn’t married throughout my life-- I just meant that in any case scenario that IF he was married, fellow Christians would know how to react. And my reaction IF he was married-- is that it would NOT shake the core teachings or the foundations of my faith.
The above statement might be true were Jesus simply another first century do-gooder with some radical ideas about Judaism.
Jesus is God.
Agreed-- he is the father, son and the Holy Spirit.

Interesting how the letters line up neatly to the top boarder…

I think I’ll wait for Christian scholars to have time to assess the authenticity of the document before I add my own comments.
