That’s right. That’s the whole point.

People are all freaked out because it is really old but there are plenty of really old documents which teach heresy. A manuscript which says 2+2=5 doesn’t become true just because it is verified to have been written at the time of Jesus.

The Gospel of Jesus’ Wife is authentic document from the fourth century. It contains horrible errors. There is nothing more to discuss.

I think I may have read something that said it was probably copied from the Godpel of Thomas (or maybe that name is wrong) but anyway, it also includes a typo found in the Gnostic gospel it’s copied from.

I have to agree there is no mention in the gospels of Jesus being married - and it makes no sense - when Jesus raised lazarus from the dead it would of been obvious in the gospel that Jesus was married to Mary M. and as we know not long after was the crucifixion - there just was no time for this in Jesus ministry. He meets them at the beginning of his ministry and it ends with the raising of Lazarus who was their brother and then Jesus goes on to his crucifixion. The time line in the Gospel says no. And it does not fit Jesus nature or mission.

Some guy writes a fictional novel and everyone wants to take it as fact.

The holy spirit guides the church in the cannon so we have to believe what has been put forth is true - we can’t add more to it after the fact - the holy spirit was the churches guide.

I personally don’t believe it and don’t understand this need by some people to marry Jesus off.
Its a false document probably written in a attempt to cause scandal in the faith.
Well, theres alot of other things that arent mentioned in the bible either, in fact we know it does not cover EVERYTHING, it left out much of Jesus childhood, as it didnt really need to be written down, or nothing significant happened during those years…So, personally, it doesnt make much difference if Jesus was married, had kids, or not.

If he did, they obviously did not see it important enough to include, Im indifferent about it either way, does not effect anything else, so…

Yeah, they think (or thought) it may have been copied from the Gospel of Thomas.

This papyrus is called The Gospel of Jesus’ Wife. It doesn’t mean He WAS married, that’s just what they started calling it.
I stand corrected. Nevertheless, I assume the writing style is too far from the Canonical Gospels to be considered genuine.

If Jesus had been married and had a child, that information would certainly have been preserved in the Bible and/or Sacred Tradition.
What about the Gnostic gospels? When the NT was being compiled, how was it determined as to what was true and what was false, what was to be included, what was to be excluded?

I just found something online that says the next issue of Harvard Theological Review will contain information about this subject, leading that blogger to say that this probably means that the tests have come back positive that this isn’t a modern day forgery.

In the comment section, someone said word is that the ink so many “experts” said was from recent times, isn’t new after all.

Would you mind sharing it with us?

Other than an argument from silence, is there anything anywhere that says Jesus was single?

There are two things being discussed. The authenticity of the date and the authenticity of what it teaches. These are two different things.

There are lots of authentic writings from the second, third and fourth centuries which contain unorthodox teaching. Nobody disputes that the document about Jesus having a wife is an authentic document from its time. What is disputed is whether it teaches truth or fallacy.

There are documents about the heresy of Docetism from the second century. Arius wrote about the heresy of Arianism in the third and fourth centuries. No one claims that their documents weren’t written when they were, only that they don’t contain orthodox teaching.

I want to say, “Who cares when it was written?” It could be an authentic document from the time of Moses for all I care. What I care about is whether it teaches truth. Any document which claims that Jesus was married does not teach truth.

Other than the Biblical Gospels not mentioning Jesus having a wife, how are we to be certain His being single is truth?

If every reliable source of history makes no mention of Jesus having a wife and the only sources which do are from less than reliable (being generous here) and questionable sources, it doesn’t take a lot of effort to figure out where the truth is to be found.

Why would this even be recorded? It’s a non-event. No one records a something that never took place or a marriage that never occured due to a relationship which never began. Unless a person married, they were single.

Remember a couple of years ago there was all that hoopla about a fragment of papyrus that some thought meant Jesus might’ve been married?
Does anyone have any new information on it that points it to be false?
You’ve answered your own question. The “hoopla” has gone away. That wouldn’t of happened if it were true.

Let’s face facts, stories that shock us are great money makers. That’s why you see “documentaries” about the pyramids being built by aliens or other absurd things. They’re new and interesting, but entirely fiction.

This brings up my next question; forgive my lack of Biblical history, but this papyrus may be copied from a Gnostic gospel. How do we know that all the Gnostics were wrong in what they said? IOW, how were the canonical Gospels chosen and on what grounds were the Gnostics rejected?
Since you mentioned it, the gnostic gospels have been widely discredited. The early Christian Church rejected them.

Here’s an article you can check out on that: catholicherald.com/stories/Gnostic-Gospels,3404

I just read the article you posted. The Gnostics are downright weird. I wonder if the Gospel of Jesus’ Wife is part of the Gnostics, which I think there has been speculation that it is.
That’s a good question, I don’t know. I only brought it up because you mentioned it.

In regards to the article, it comes from an article series called “Straight Answers”. I highly recommend reading it. Every now and again the priest who writes it combines the answers into a book and sells them. There’s been at least two so far. Anyway, I’ve found a lot of good answers to the faith that way.

Other than the Biblical Gospels not mentioning Jesus having a wife, how are we to be certain His being single is truth?
Well, what would the benefit of Jesus having a wife be? We already know that in order to commit to marriage we must be open to procreation, so it really just doesn’t make sense… Jesus brought the dead back to life by Himself, so can we really believe that He would need to have intercourse in order to bring a life into the world?

…also, it doesn’t make sense that Jesus would love one person more than everyone else since His purpose was to rescue all people. And if Jesus was God, why would He have impregnated Mary the “Virgin Mother”, yet choose to have sexual relations with another woman… Surely you can see why this ‘gospel’ was thrown out.

More importantly than proof, things must also make sense.

Wouldn’t the early Christian Church be biased? Or were they able to reject various writings because the Apostolic tradition ?
Your second question is correct. The early Christians rejected the Gnostic Gospels because they so obviously conflicted with Christian belief.
