The Gospel writers/the beasts in Revelation

My seventh grader learned the four symbols of the gospel writers yesterday at catechism, and as she was telling me about it I immediately thought of the four-headed beast in the Revelation (Apocalypse) of St. John, chapter 4. Is there any connection here? I am just wondering because if there is, it is really interesting that these four heralds who gave us the Gospels (the “good news”) would be portrayed in Heaven continuing to proclaim the reign of Jesus. :harp:

Interesting thought.

I can’t tell you for sure, but as I learn more about scripture, I notices that these similarities are rarely without reason!
 
I believe that (the Rev. verse) is the source of the four symbols of the Evangelists. They also appear in Ezekiel’s apocalyptic visions (chapters 1 and 10). I’m not sure who first pointed out the parallels, but it seems reasonable to assume that John deliberately used that image from Ezekiel and made the connection to the four gospels, all of which were extant before the writing of his Revelation. (Among other things this would be evidence AGAINST the various other “gospels” that were in circulation at the time.)
 
It’s not a 4 headed beast in Revelation. It’s 4 separate creatures.
