I watched the grammy’s tonight. I liked all the music (not that I haven’t most of it before). However, I didn’t like the suggestive live performances (Rihanna comes to mind). I am having trouble making decision if I sinned or not.

Some of the performances were suggestive (lady gaga, Rihanna and Drake). Well, actually, I’m having trouble telling if they are. Maybe part of the reason is because I looked away, hoped the ‘bad part’ (best fitting word) went away, and if it didn’t I looked away again or concentrated on another part of the stage. I feel like I didn’t sin, then I feel like I did, and then not again. Then I doubt myself and try to compare it to three conditions of a mortal sin. I can’t determine. Then when I pray and ask God I feel better. Then I think I’m making excuses for myself. I feel scrupulous.

Asking myself is doing No good. I don’t know if I really don’t know it’s a sin or am just rationalizing. I don’t even if know if I know about the last sentence. Oh, since I’m typing as I think, this is just getting worse.

Anyone else who saw some of the Grammy’s want to help? Please? Its making me real anxious. For the times the singers were being weird on stage, no bad thoughts came upon me. I’ve been a little scrupulous before but tonight its coming back full fledged. Just hours ago I thought I was free from it.

breathe.

stop being so hard on yourself. we are living in a society in which these things are all around us. It is the society we are born into. We were not born into the 5th century where there was no mass media showing women in no clothing, mass media, advertisements, etc… but in the 21st century it is here… if you cannot enjoy an award show, do not watch it, or enjoy it and know your a man of christ who thinks women are hot in clad clothing and when they do provocative things, it will make you think provocatively because that is what happens when beautiful women wear close to nothing and shake around.

Jesus loves you. He is right with you through all of this. Embrace who you are, and you can have a little laugh at these things 🙂

Sinful? Tell that to Grammy winners BeBe & Cece Winans, Mavis Staples, Switchfoot, and Patty Griffith, whose “Downtown Church” won Best Traditional Gospel Album. TobyMac and Steven Curtis were nominated for Best Contemporary Gospel, though someone else won that category. Tia Carrera (from ‘Waynes’ World’) won Best Hawaiian music album. Wow. Who knew?

It’s too bad the Grammys show can’t ever showcase the diversity of nominees: it’s not the MTV Video Awards (which would help explain the shameful omission of the Black Keys ‘Tighten Up’ video from even getting a video nomination, though they still won two Grammys), and I wish the Grammy could start to act like grown-ups since there are grown-ups who get nominated.

Here’s the complete list of winners:

Well. I did not see that show, guess it was not shown in Finland, not live anyhow. If we really try we can see “sex” and sin in almost everything and everyone. Don’t be hard on Yourself, the clothes they have on,or rather, what they don’t have on them,is a part of the show. I bet they don’t dress up like that every day. But ask Yourself why You think it could be a sin. I am a bit older then You I think, and my music taste is different from Yours,I should believe, but if You turn to the road “everything is sin” that will not take You anywhere. This is year 2011,and we need to understand that. And take a look at some “old” movie, from the 40 or 50,and there is sexy girls to. What happen when You look at some singer who could have more clothes on? Start from that, and then You act upon Your feeling,if it is sin for You,it is. If not, keep watching. We know what basically is sin,but we all are individuals and respond differently to many things,so it is impossible to determinate what really is sin outside those the Bible say and what the Church teaches us. And last,You will not go to hell because You watch “Grammy” or “Oscar” shows. There is more sin in the newspapers every day. But from Your letter I can sense that this thing bothers You,so go and confess. God bless You.

Dude, it’s not a sin to watch a concert/performance/awards show. You’re fine. 👍 However, you seem really scrupulous. I would suggest you stop worrying about what is a sin and what’s not before your scrupulosity tortures you so much you fall away from the Church.

Yes there* can* be sins involved in watching the Grammy’s…just as in other things that include such material.

But if they are not per se a near occasions of say mortal sin in general for you…(or scandal for others) then one could watch the good parts and just take a break (watch something else…read a book) when things come on that are not in keeping with your baptismal seal…

One has to make a judgment in each thing…knowing the thing itself and yourself.

Think of the early Christians who avoided the “spectacles” due to the idolatry and immoral content…

Since the Grammy’s are not as bad…one could prudently watch the good parts and avoid the rest …and if someone brings them up …you can perhaps say …I watched the good parts…but skipped the bad .

Perhaps the greatest sin occurred before the Grammy’s broadcast was even aired. Eduard Khil’s stirring rendition of “I Am Glad, Cause I’m Finally Returning Back Home”, better known as Trololo failed to be nominated for best song.

Granted, it was recorded in 1976, but only in 2010 did it become an international smash hit. Mr. Khil totally deserved recognition for his contribution to the music of 2010. And unlike the songs which were nominated in that category, “Trololo” contained no obscene language.

Yes, some parts of the Grammy’s were tawdry. There is no doubt that many performers of pop music use sexually provocative language or behavior as a hook for their songs. And we can expect those performers to use their appearance before a national audience to further indulge those tactics. However, as Havana1 pointed out, not all performers on the Grammy’s appealed to gutter instincts because such behavior is not part of their music or their career.

Mr. Khil would have fit in well with that latter crowd.

The Grammy’s sinful? I don’t know
The Grammy’s asinine? Yup

I don’t know if it’s sinful, but I haven’t watched it in years because I’m not that interested in the particular musicians they showcase.

Now… if they did more like this youtube.com/watch?v=E0o9ku8yw4U from the 1987 Grammy Awards with Kathleen Battle and Christopher Parkening doing Bach-Gounod’s “Ave Maria”, or this from the 1980 Grammy’s with Patti Lupone singing “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina” youtube.com/watch?v=LYTIUgSokf0maybe I’d watch it.

Whether or not they are to people’s tastes (I actually am not into particular broadway singing, nor am I that crazy about musicals in general) those were ladies with actual vocal technique and talent for the styles they were trained in and neither one had to dress provocatively or undulate across the floor to get attention.

But that’s just my opinion.
