The Green Scapular - It's unapproved - but is it to be avoided also?

The Green Scapular - As far as I’m aware it’s an unapproved scapular - but is it to be avoided also?

The Green Scapular is claimed to have been revealed in nature to Sister Justine Bisqueyburo in 1840, it was then made famous a few years later by St Dominic Savio (One of St John Bosco’s boys) who put it round the neck of his mother to aid her pains in childbirth. It has since been claimed by the unofficial ‘society of the green scapular’ to hold a variety of strong intercessional powers largely based on the level of faith and belief of the wearer or the faithful person who places it upon the recipient.

There’s clearly some mixed opinions on this - and I don’t know a lot about it. But is there any harm in having a devotional yearning towards an unapproved scapular? After all, all scapulars were at one point unapproved, as were all apparitions.

I really have no advice for you on this. But I must comment on this bit of logic that you attempt to use.

The only way this logic can work is if the corollary was true, that being that all scapularars and apparitions become approved. They don’t.

According to the last paragraph at this site, the Green Scapular was approved.

I am not attempting to insinuate that all unapproved apparitions/scapulars will oneday become approved - I am merely stating that they all start out unapproved. 😉

I’m not trying to use implicit logic to make a point here. I’m simply asking a question. 🙂

Apparently there’s no ‘official’ record of that happening according to the Catholic Encylopedia. It’s a bit like when PP Pius XII ‘allegedly’ approved Maria Valotorta’s Poem of the Man God - there’s not official Vatican attestation to it.
 
It’s a private devotion. As long as it isn’t condemned and you aren’t using the devotion superstitiously, I don’t see a problem.
 
“Apostolate of the Green Scapular” promotes unapproved apparitions (and as far as I know, other errors about the scapulars use) but the green scapular was twice approved by Blessed Pope Pius IX in 1863 and again in 1870, When he said: " write to these good Sisters that I authorize them to make and distribute it."

If it’s false it’s news to me. :confused:
 
surprised at this myself. could someone please explain the difference between giving the green scapular to sombody and saying the prayer with confidence that mary will intercede for us on behalf of the person who we give it to and using it superstitiously.
 
And can someone also please explain to me what the difference is between using a scapular appropriately and using one superstitiously?

I’m a bit confused…
 
One of the ways of using a scapular superstitously is this, as I see it.

The brown scapular has a promise from Mary saying, “Whosoever dies clothed in this habit shall not suffer the fires of hell.”

So using this superstitously is that the person would never take off the brown scapular thinking that if they die with it off they will go to Hell and also believeing that just wearing the brown scapular means that they are saved and will go to Heaven.

Using it superstitiously would be to neglect the prayer and expect that the scapular itself will draw down the graces and blessings needed.

It must be together with faith and prayer that the sacramental is used.
 
I am given no reason to not believe in the green scapular from this thread and since confidence in Mary and the prayer are part of what is required, and what should be the focus, I find the allegations frustrating to say the least and I am not going to put merit in them. :nope:
 
I can only offer this testimony. A friend who was addicted to cocaine, came to my office, and stated he did not want to live anymore. I gave him the Green Scapular and told him to put his trust in Jesus, through Mary. He has since kicked his habit, and volunteers at the cancer center regularly. Though the Scapular does not need to be worn, he wears it as a sign of love for what Mary did for him. The green Scapular is powerful because Mary’s loves us, and wants us to love her Son Jesus.
 
Well, If you go around wearing glasses with colored lenses – such that the green becomes a hue of a different “approved” color – then maybe everything will be OK 🙂

When a person has been a drug user since 13, and quits at 38 because of an inspiration and grace he received as a result of the Green Scapular, it becomes a time for reflection about who is responsible for this generous gift of grace. Our Blessed Mother Mary is the most creative of mothers, and it makes sense that she will inspire each of us, not only with the miracles, but with an array beautiful and vibrant colors to go with the miracles. Green, Blue, Red, White, Brown… all colors that lead us to a greater love for Mary, and her Son Jesus Our Lord & Savior. If Green colored glasses helps us to see Mary in a clearer light, then we should not only wear the glasses, but perhaps invest in green contacts as well.
