I know it’s late when I wrote this but I can’t sleep and I figured eventually someone will help me out.
And I figure this is the right thread, you can correct me if I’m wrong.
I want someone to explain to me the Gregorian mode system. I have knowledge of music theory so get technical if you want but explain to me exactly what you mean, big words scare everyone off.
I know the Byzantine octoechos influenced it. I also know that modes 1 3 5 and 7 are the Dorian Phrygian (Spanish or as I say Arabic mode, I think it sounds Arabic) Lydian and Myxolydian, respectively.
What confuses me is the plagal variations of each, how they correspond to their authentic counterparts. Do they use exactly the same notes as the authentic modes? What normal modes could they correspond to, e.g. A plain major scale or a minor scale? The internets have no sources explaining them fully.
