At the end of the day, if its working out for you, and things are right in your life, then keep doing that.

However, if you’re a porkster don’t be complaining that your husband doesn’t want to have sex with you, or that your wife watches soap operas and reads romance novels instead of thinking about you.

Still, I really wonder what % of those who say they don’t have time just don’t think its important enough to make the extra effort.

ps. I’m a guy, I need to change my username though!

you might want to check out this month’s Readers Digest for an article that refutes this claim, and the mistaken notion that “if I just could get thinner I would become sexier”. Sexual attraction and satisfaction does not have all that much to do with weight.
That I believe. I also don’t believe that hot bods = great marriages. Again–if that were the case…people wouldn’t be divorced so much in Hollywood…

But, there is something to be said about staying in shape for God…and for health. And, I know that I do like it when my dh takes notice when I have been working out. Nothin’ wrong with that, either. It’s all about balance…and striving for it.

Sorry, I consider C.S. Lewis, Plato and Aristotle a bit weightier than Readers Digest.

That claim is on a credibility par with Jesus was an alien and Noah came from Atlantis… oh yeah, can’t forget Bat-Boy too.

Note, I am saying not being a, uh, ‘large person’ is a more or less necessary but insufficient condition.

Nice. Well I was a size 5 when I met my hubby, I’m now a size 14. I still have to beat the man off with a stick.😉 I guess he isn’t as shallow as some men.

Some men like that!

Actually, maybe I am wrong- I mean, large people do reproduce, and according to my logic, they wouldn’t.

Shrug. Well, I still say taking care of yourself is a good thing and if you willingly let yourself go then that is a gravely immoral act because you’re violating the 5th commandment.

Perhaps this could be expounded on a little bit.

We should be nurturing EVERY aspect of ourselves…spiritual, intellectual, emtional, physical, etc. The better physical health we are in, the better we can pray. So for the sake of your spiritual life, we should take care of our bodies

Matthew Kelly talks about if you were to have a prized racehorse, would you feed it mcdonalds? of course not…so how much more valuable our bodies are, why are we feeding it fast food?

If we put our priorities straight: First God, second family, 3rd: job

That doesn’t mean proportional hard time, but we honor our family by having a good work ethic at the job. We honor God by spending time with our family, etc…

I think if we find ourselves neglecting one aspect, then there is something out of balance, and we must do what we can to fix it.

I am a music director at a church, of course, during Christmas season, I work 60 + hours a week…however, the couple weeks after, I “pay back” my time to the other things I’ve neglected by keeping such a hard work schedule.

mschrank, I agree with you on the basic concept of exercise, however , one of the motivations you give I don’t think are good prime reasons. marital problems will not disappear if folks exercise, simply because they “look” better. In fact, I know of very holy couples that because of the sacramental grace and understanding of theology of the body, that they come to love their spouses’ “flaws”. Eros attraction is not just physical, but emotional as well

Also, mschrank…might I suggest a little softer wording …your phrases “you need to” and “stop being lazy” even though directed at no one in particular, dont’ sit well with anyone.

Kage ar, it sounds like you are at work for 12 hour days, 5 days a week (plus commuting time). You must know that isn’t healthy in ANY way…for your spiritual, emotional, or physical health, your family, or even just for an employer to expect such hours.

That being said, I know that I know absolutely nothing about your family, finances, job, situation, or anything. You gotta do what you gotta do, but I hope you will consider it a short term situation. Consider moving closer, another job, SOMETHING. because its not just about not exercising, that kind of situation can actually kill you. literally.

Since men don’t always use the right words (porkster? come on:rolleyes:, lol) I think I would like to take a crack at defending our MRchrank…

IF a spouse makes no effort to stay attractive (i.e eats too much junk, doesn’t get any kind of exercise, doesn’t take care of physical appearance, neglects hygiene etc) then it is really unfair of that spouse to EXPECT or DEMAND that it is the other spouse’s responsibility to force those “lovin’ feelings”. Like there is something wrong with a man or woman NOT being attracted to a spouse who doesn’t make any effort or care.

How am I doing so far OP?

Yes, exactly!

That’s why marketing and communications people are always women!

I hardly think it would go over well if he keeps saying things like “stop being lazy” and “porkster”

Oh, I thought you didn’t believe the Reader’s Digest article that Puzzleannie mentioned. You insinuated that Aristotle had somehow proven that one cannot be attractive and overweight at the same time. Now you’re admitting that some men don’t think thinner=sexier? You’re not making any sense.

Neither is it your place to tell others the state of their souls by generalizing that “letting yourself go is a gravely immoral act.” Why, because the wife would rather have a delicious home-made dinner on the table for her husband than pack her gym bag and disappearance act in the name of the Cult of Skinny? That behavior, IMHO, would be much more damaging to the family than being a little out of shape. (not to say that people who work out neglect their families, but the potential is there and it does happen, just like any other activity–work, volunteering, shopping, talking on the phone with friends, housework, etc.)

And what you’re neglecting is that some people fall in love with more than just looks. I hope that you wise up before marriage, or you will be the one griping about marital woes.

In addition to my longer post about balance:

Rhythm of Life by Matthew Kelly talks about keeping life in balance…good suggestions

Hey, CatholicSam.

Stop being obtuse. I told you that it was only grave if laziness was the issue. i.e., I don’t care about my body. If the wife has bigger fish to fry, then it’s not laziness is it?

Why is this so hard for some people to grasp. The main points of this thread imo:
  1. If you don’t exercise yourself because you plainly can’t be bothered, then its morally wrong.
  2. What Melia said
If you (as in ‘one’) have a ‘dispensation’ in some form, either no time or sick or whatever, then you’re good. Your own conscience can judge.

See you there. And I promise not to refer to food products in a disparaging way. Especially pork or pig related or products derived from that animal.

Hey Mschrank.

Stop being scurrilous. You first generalize that every person, better make it to the gym or face certain marital collapse. When I take issue with that absurd generalization you get even more aggressive.

For your information, there are cannonized Saints who in fact did purposely let their bodies “go” and suffered from that. They participated in extreme fasts and gasp did not go to the gym. They survived by eating food that was far from being a healthy, balanced diet, all as part of a sacrifice for God. We are called to imitate Jesus, even up to the “This is my body which is given up for you.” Fathers who work hard all day long and come home to spend some quality time with their children before falling into bed exhausted, are doing a greater good by their sacrifice than if they stopped at the gym on their way home instead. Mothers who lose their figure when they have babies, marring their hot bods with stretch marks and a little loose skin, are doing better work for God than those who selfishly go to the gym and put off having children because they like their looks. In fact, I think that anyone who puts exercise on the same priority level as family and prayer is heading in the wrong direction. (which is not to say that it’s impossible to have a good exercise routine and still fulfill family and prayer obligations)

And also, we are not allowed to judge even ourselves. That’s God’s job, don’t forget it. 🙂

I guess no one read my past posts… 😦 sigh

Catholic SAM…I totally agree with you…

however…just an added thought.

Exercise itself should not be a higher priority than family, but remember, exercise HELPS us pray better, and we are healthier so we can be active with our families, and live longer.

If you all read my past posts about balance… we honor God by giving time to our family, and we honor our family by going to work, etc
