RattleSnake:
Also, I can’t believe someone would want a “hip hop” Mass. Why not an old school Punk Mass. The priest could blow snot out his nose… when we come up to receive communion we can spit on him. Pogo down the isle. Instead of peace be with you… we can offer “the bird.”

And this is coming from a former punk! (early 80’s NoCal punk)
Ah, the good old days…

Sing it with me RattleSnake:

Punk ain’t no religious cult
Punk means thinkin for yourself
You ain’t hardcore cause you spike your hair
When a jock still lives inside your head

But given where we are, I think we can skip the chorus on that one. 😉

I understand on the one hand the desire to reach out to others via the culture they are immersed in, but at the same time, part of the role of the Church is to draw people out of their former lives and into life in Christ. By importing that culture into the Church, we make it that much more difficult to see the distinction.

I strongly encourage spreading the word through cultural music forms - be they hip hop, punk, heavy metal, classical, country, or even (and I shudder at this) contemporary Christian music (why is it so bland?). I do not think, however, that bringing such forms into the Liturgy of the Church is in any way positive.

We are to go out into the world to spread the word and to call people out of the world and into Christ. How can we do that when we keep bringing the world into the Church?

Peace be with you!

I’m sure you have heard of Fr. Stan Fortuna. He’s a Catholic priest and a rapper. There’s a priest here in Oregon as well who raps, Fr. John (can’t remember his last name). A guy I used to work with was in a rap group that rapped about…guess what?..God. A Christian rap group.

Is this sickening? Read my earlier post too about the rappers I listed.

In Christ,
Rand

Well thank God the Episcopal Church doesn’t have valid apostolic succession and are therefore without a valid Eucharist to commit sacrileges against.
