The Historic Exodus

I’ve read some interesting threads regarding the lack of historic support for the Book of Mormon, i.e. the mention of chickens, elephants, camels in pre-Columbian Americas. In reading these threads, my thoughts turned to the Bible. I know the Bible generally holds up well to historical scrutiny. We even have a mummy mentioned in the Bible, Shishaq.

There’s one troubling exception: the Exodus. There is a lack of archaeogical support of the Exodus. And the Exodus is pivotal to all Abrahamic religions: Judaism, Islam, Christianity, SDA, LDA, JW, etc. The implications are huge as this lacking of extra-Biblical support affects the Ten Commandments, Mosaic Law, the Ark of the Covenant.

I thought I’d start this thread for conversational purposes only. My faith is still intact.

Curious, which parts of Exodus are missing proof? Do you mean the water parting for the crossing of the sea? I actually saw a thing years ago that proved the right wind on that sea could part it and bring up dry land. The bible says God brought up a wind and parted the water…just a thought off the top-o-my-head…

I was watching a show on TBN about the historical evidence of the exodus, and they were exploring the bottom of the red sea, and showing the coral growth that is very unusual in a certain part of the sea where it is possible that the Jews crossed, and the Egyptians were drowned.

They had submerged camera, or a small submarine, I can’t remember which, to explore the bottom of the red sea.

One of the shapes of the coral growth is circular and looks like it could have been covering a wheel from a chariot. And it is not just one piece that looks like that, there are many corals with unusual shapes in that area which could be the covered remains of the Egyptian army. The one piece that caught my attention was the circular one, and you could see what would have been the outside of the wheel, and also the center hub, which were metal, and wouldn’t have decomposed as quickly as the wood, and allowed the coral to attach to it.

Because of the environmental laws they are not allowed to dig up these corals and inspect them closer.

I was a bit skeptical, but it sure did look like it could have been what they were saying.
I would have hoped that they had shown other coral areas of the sea to show if they also have the same shapes or not to prove that these formations were only in this certain area of the red sea.

But I left the show thinking that it was possible that this was in fact the remains of the Pharaoh’s drowned army.

A wonderful show on this OT stuff (he actually does some NT pieces as well) is the Naked Archaelogist. It is on History International Channel Wednesdays from 9-10PM. He did one on the Exodus and another two part special locating what he believes is Mt. Sinai. I watch it fairly often and nearly all the shows are on Bible topics.
