This series, so far, has exceeded my expectations of what to expect from the {History} Channel. We’re both looking forward to tonights installment.

Going back to the ram-lamb thing, I’m thinking that the change may be due to the overly-Christian bent this series has - in other words, they may have showed a lamb to draw out a parallel between the sacrifice of this lamb and the future sacrifice of the Lamb. I think this is related to their depiction of ‘God’ as being eerily reminiscent of Jesus (long hair, etc.)

If anyone is interested last weeks episode is already on youtube. It doesn’t have any commercials and plays uninterrupted. This is very good, especially for those lacking cable or just the History Channel.
Watched it on Youtube actually, and the one thing I could say is that the show as it is now is meant to be watched with commercials: otherwise you have this awkward situation where events are shown twice. 😛

I read these forums frequently but post rarely.

I know the makers of this film meant well, but this is why we lose. I have no doubt as to why the “History” Channel aired this, because to them it’s harmless or worse. They’re flashing through what should be pondered and read through the eyes of the Church, and the whole thing seems like a fairy tale. This can actually shake a person’s faith, not strengthen it or help people find Faith, e.g. “Is it really true about Sampson’s hair??”, etc.

As if that’s not bad enough, they’re taking major liberties with the Bible!–Sampson’s a black man (PC at the expense of Truth), King Saul kills himself, Moses and Ramsees fighting as young guys, to name a few. If you can take liberties with the Bible, what is Truth? Why take it seriously?

On top of all this, the film’s one dementional and doesn’t know what it wants to be–a Cecil B DeMille flick? Lord of the Rings? (saw a clip of Christ being tempted by Satan and Satan looked like a Black Rider), Passion of the Christ-like music? A documentary with a narrator? What exactly is it and what’s it’s point? A good story? Who’s it supposed to impact? Had a feeling it would be superficial when they left out “God will provide His own sacrifice” when Abraham was about to sacrifice Isaac, which is THE Prophesy of prophesies about Christ imo. I can go on and on. It’s same old, same old and we’re not in the same old situation today.

In my opinion, this is for people with a very simple Faith. Nothing wrong with a simple faith!–but what’s gained and what’s potentially lost with other groups? Is this going to lead an intelligent high school kid to faith or the opposite?

Gibson did it the right way and they FEARED The Passion–rightfully! He took one profound aspect and brought out its power, its implications and its impact in great depth. This is like a drive by, changing what they want changed as they see fit. It IS Touched by an Angel-like!

We’re in a fight for our lives. We need films and books that will make people stop and think, not say “Wow! Get a load of the size of that Goliath guy!”. I wish they hadn’t run the truly beautifully done Catholics Come Home ad on this. I hate to say it, but this film so far is fodder for the Dawkins, neo/militant Atheist crowd. We need to use our heads! The History Channel running it should have been a big red flag.

Sorry to come off like an old, grouchy guy (I’m neither), but we really have to know what we’re up against, and how to fight. Smiley Face Christianity doesn’t cut it.

Wonder if they’ll make John the Baptist an Italian?? Why not?! Maybe he’ll break into a song or something. A little musical interlude can’t hurt.

In regards to the last post, I will only point out that Abraham does, in fact, reply to Isaac’s question about the sacrifice with the right answer. I can’t quote it exactly, since we watched it last night, but I remember that line being included.

I enjoyed the second part of this series; I was hoping for some Gideon, but we can’t get everything in ten hours. The battle of Jericho was well done, as was Samson’s final triumph. The rest of the film was Saul and David, and we could really feel the change in both men as they grew into their power and allowed it to overtake their service to God. David’s initial foray into Jerusalem was really gross, though.

All in all, we’re very much looking forward to the rest of this series, and I really want to see Elijah take on the Baal-worshippers. Please, please, please!

Actually, Saul does kill himself.

Now the Philistines were fighting against Israel, and the men of Israel fled before the Philistines and fell slain on Mount Gilboa. And the Philistines overtook Saul and his sons, and the Philistines struck down Jonathan and Abinadab and Malchi-shua, the sons of Saul. The battle pressed hard against Saul, and the archers found him, and he was badly wounded by the archers. Then Saul said to his armor-bearer, “Draw your sword, and thrust me through with it, lest these uncircumcised come and thrust me through, and mistreat me.” But his armor-bearer would not, for he feared greatly. Therefore Saul took his own sword and fell upon it. And when his armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he also fell upon his sword and died with him. Thus Saul died, and his three sons, and his armor-bearer, and all his men, on the same day together.

Yes. When I get right serious a whole thread will probably follow and much weeping and gnashing of teeth. 😃
LOL!
So what, you want the film to become as comprehensive as a scholar’s tome that nobody actually reads? 😉
No… something much more reasonable than that – I just want to be the director who gets to make all the editing decisions! 😉
As for the question of Sarai/Sarah’s infertility, one could pose the question: if Sarai’s barrenness in Genesis 18 was caused by her advanced age at the time of her statement, then why didn’t Abram and Sarai have a child during the theoretical time period when she was still able to? The usual answer that films have is that Sarah’s infertility was a condition she already had even when they were just leaving Haran: in other words, it is not that Sarah could no longer conceive, but that she could not conceive.
Well, I guess I see it this way: they would have already known, since she hadn’t given birth up till then, but they either see it naturally (she’s now too old) or supernaturally (God has ‘cursed’ her); this show refuses to present the former, and the latter would have been seen as a matter that’s not terminal. (After all, women would have prayed – fervently! – that God (or their gods) would make them fertile. In that case, Lot’s wife would never have spoken as if Sarai had just walked out of the doctor’s office where they told her that she was infertile. It just had that feel of anachronism to me – fertility through a 21st century lens…
Ninjas don’t fight in public view. Shinobi-no-mono, ‘men of stealth’.
LOL… true – perhaps a ‘Kill Bill’ reference would’ve been more on the mark…!

I’ve already noted this, but there’s a very short scene just before Abraham calls up Sarah to tell him about his God ordering them to move away out of Haran showing Sarah praying in front of a table with miniature idols in it. While it does sort of show Sarah (at least) being a polytheist of sorts, the scene only lasts for a few seconds, so it comes across more like a token scene than one which establishes something major to the plot. Abraham fleshes out the historical context more, but then again it has a much larger running time than The Bible’s segment has, so that adaptation can move about at a leisurely pace.

You know, I’m thinking of suggesting to the filmmakers a beat 'em up game called “Angels vs. Men of Sodom.” Perhaps they could release it as a tie-in merchandise with a free Mr. Asian Angel action figure (with kung-fu grip) for the first release.

Oh, and they’ve deleted the episode off Youtube.

I was able to catch half of episode 2 and have the rest recorded. We are watching it as a family and are going to get our extended family in to see it later. This is the best thing I have seen on TV in a long time. I really have to respect the producers for accuracy and choice of editting.

I loved the imagery of the burning bush! However, it really bothered me that for the Passover - they showed one lamb being cut - and everyone getting blood out to put on their doorpost. It totally left out the meal, the familes eating the lamb that they sacrificed.

Did that bother any one else?

I wonder if they will downplay the Last Supper.

No it didnt bother me.

And I doubt that they will downplay the Last Supper as Roma Downey (she and her husband produced this) is a devout Catholic.

The way I look at it, I couldn’t do half the job they are doing editing the Bible and making it presentable. I think it is one of the best jobs in a long while. I think it good to avoid the half empty mentality and applaud the effort and the evangelism.

Thanks, my wife would say I needed that! 🙂

So far I like this mini-series. I saw the interview on EWTN with the producers Mark and Roma (who are Catholic). They are sincere and worked hard for this mini-series. A group of us at church are studying The Bible Timeline and this series is falling right in line with it.

This has been the MOST watched cable series. Where are all the whiners and negative nancies now? I stick my tongue out in your general direction… 😛

Um… did you also notice how a lot of the characters look Western European, and how THAT probably wouldn’t be accurate, either?

Look at Jonathan for example. Where is he supposed to be from, London?
