Have any of you read *The Holy Eucharist *by Saint Alphonsus de Ligouri? What did you think of it? I ask because someone left it in the back of our church, and I had been reading it during meditations. Now it’s not there any more, and I miss it.

St. Alphonsus was a prolific writer, but I really haven’t read much of his work. He founded a great order–the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, aka The Redemptorists. Initials: CSsR.

I could not recommend this work enough!! de Ligouri is a Doctor of the Church (the only Moral Theologian with such a distinction) and his meditations/reflections on the Eucharist etc are simply astounding. For anyone desiring a glimpse into the interior state of a soul steeped in “heroic virtue” - this will provide substantial illumination. The affective aspect of such a child of God is very clear. If you want to know how a living saint views the meaning of life - this provides incredible light. Interestingly enough, it is a compilation of about 4 or 5 works. And the reading of his various sentiments and the like are most consistent with the description of St. John of the Cross’s description of a soul that has passed through the Dark Night of the Soul proper. Anyway - exceptional collection of works. God Bless you all!

The Holy Eucharist is excellent. I am reading it now and just ordered more books by St. Alphonsus. This book was recommended to me for meditation by my spiritual director.
