This may sound like something I should already know. However I am going to ask the question anyway for (name removed by moderator)ut from those more learned than I.

Does the Holy Spirit continue to convict a person who is in mortal sin? I know mortal sin separates us from God, but does the Spirit continue to convict in the hopes that we will turn back even though we are in a state of separation from God?

I would think the prompt to get us to go to confession after mortal sin is itself from the Holy Spirit. Off the top of my head, I don’t know what Church documents might address this.

Yes absolutely, …look to the story of the prodigal son…even when the son was far off the father came out to meet him.

Thank you all for your help. I do believe the Spirit never quits trying to get us to turn back, especially, in mortal sin. This is what I learned. Sometimes I ask questions that to CAF members may seem pretty obvious. However, down through the years, decades, my instruction into the faith has been learn it as I can. Therefore, I just want to sometimes verify what I previously learned with others who are more learned than I am to see if what I was taught is actually correct. Thanks for your patience.

The Catholic Church recognizes a particular expression of Divine Grace, known as “Prevenient” grace. This is the “yearning” for God which leads many to the Christian Faith (specifically those who have not received Christian Baptism).

There is no theological reason why Baptized Christians who have separated themselves from divine favor should have LESS recourse to Grace than those who have never received any Sacrament of Initiation. If the Holy Spirit moves THEM, it should certainly move US (and perhaps even more so).

Of course, everyone is given the gift of freewill, and may shoot God a birdie.

Yes, but depends on circumstances & gravity of sins. Early on after commission of Mortal, we are acutely aware of err. But, if not promptly confessed …the HS will pull back, because we are refusing to listen/act on that invitation to confess. Our free will choice not to, is respected, and now the trials will really begin for us …and usually more mortals will follow, even to point of habitual sinning.
At this stage, we will find it difficult to even acknowledge our sins…much less confess them. We quit going to Mass, because we don’t want to face our awful state.
The Bible gets put away in a drawer, where we wont see it and be reminded of our ‘hardness’ of heart, we won’t even call mom much …for fear she will nag us over not going to Mass, etc.
Basically, it will now take SEVERE TRIALS, PUNISHMENT FROM GOD, as in what Job experienced, to cause us to admit Prodigal Son/ Daughter status, …and then, we hopefully will return again to the Father/ Son…as we are desperate and sinking fast.
