I seek to understand what is distinct about the Holy Spirit because the Father and the Son are also spiritual persons.
Both the Father and the Son use the Spirit to rain down Graces on us. It is the Spirit that guides us to the Truth. It is the Spirit to inspires us to love one another.

My personal comments: I think that sometimes we should perhaps be praying to the Holy Spirit for guidance here on earth since He was personally sent down to be with us and guide us. It appears that many of us ignore the Holy Spirit and go straight to God or Jesus. Although they are all the same person, there was a reason why Jesus, when he ascended to Heaven, sent down the Holy Spirit to be with us and for us. We should, perhaps, give more attention to the Holy Spirit than most of us do. This is open to much conversation, but we must keep in mind that God/Jesus “SENT” the Holy Spirit to be with US. We should not ignore His presence.

How can God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit be one. Hey, I am a grandfather, a father and also a son , but yet there is only one of me. But I act as three people on different occasions.

Be with me, Holy Spirit, that all my thoughts may be Holy.
Move in me, Holy Spirit, that my works too will be Holy.
Abide in my heart, Holy Spirit, that I may love only what is Holy.
Strengthen me, Holy Spirit, that I may defend all that is Holy.
Protect me, Holy Spirit, that I may always be Holy.

Amen!

At the risk of sounding like an ignoramus:
Isn’t the Holy Spirit kind of God manifesting himself in people? I always took, “He has spoken through the prophets” as evidence/explanation of that.
God, the Father in Heaven
Jesus–Himself as His son in an actual human body
The Holy Spirit–His love and will carried out through or influencing the acts of people.
I dunno, I could be totally wrong, and it wouldn’t be the first time! :o

What about the depiction of the Holy Spirit as a dove? Does it correlate to the dove Noah sent out to see if the earth was livable yet?

You mean,
a) As the waters recede, the Dove flies up with an olive twig that symbolizes new life?
b) As Jesus comes up out of the water, a Dove flies down symbolizing the new life that comes with Baptism?

No, I don’t see any correlations… 😉

Good observation, Christine!

My thoughts, feel to free to correct/refine:

The Holy Spirit lives in the Father and the Son.

The Holy Spirit is God. This is the same Spirit that is the Spirit of the Father. It is by this Spirit of the Father that the Son lives and it is by this Spirit that the Son is completely docile to the Father and does only what the Father does. Jesus is a perfect reflection of the Father because the Spirit of the Father lives in Him. There is nothing about the Son that makes Him a Son except that the Spirit of the Father dwells fully in Him.

I think people may get confused understanding the Trinity because we try to understand each person separately, yet Jesus is Who He Is because the Spirit of the Father Who Is the Holy Spirit completely lives in Him. This is His identity as Son. I don’t think He has any other identity.
