The only option, it seems to me, is for Christians to obfuscate and rationalize away the offensive parts of the OT. But under no circumstances can they admit that the books actually mean what they say they mean.
I assume you feel the same antipathy toward Jews and Muslims as well?

Jews have much the same problem. Muslims not as much. The Koran and hadith are horrifyingly bad guides to living morally, but a substantial fraction of the Muslim population take the books at face value. These Muslims are the ones trying to blow themselves up and kill infidels.

My point is that nobody takes the Bible to mean what it says. Not even Fundie Christians. They’re all playing the same game in their heads, all the while proclaiming themselves to be the “real” Christians. So I’d have nothing to gain by speaking to this priest or that theologian - as they’re basically working from the same absurd premise: That the Creator of the Universe wrote/dictated/inspired a book so superficially faulty that it actually REQUIRES mortals to study it and offer their counter-intuitive interpretations to allow us the luxury of calling it a worthy guide to life in the 21st century.
To paraphrase St. Francis: “Too-ra-loo-ra-loo! Much do I say, but little do I do!”

Bad guides to living morally, and only a fraction of the world’s two billion Muslims take the Koran seriously…? Is this another one of those comments that we’re supposed to just swallow as fact because you wrote it down for us (much like the other “fact” you asserted that the biology of man shows that God wanted men to enjoy anal intercourse)?

Okay. (Although I disagree with you about the Fundamentalists, but that is fodder for a different thread.)

So what?

We take the Bible not the way it is written literally, but in the way that it was intended.
As our Holy Father said, “We are not a people of the Book.” That’s a descriptor of Muslims or Jews. 🤷

You ought to be aware that Catholics do not proclaim that our beliefs come from the Bible. The Catholic faith was whole and entire before a single page of the Bible was ever codified.

To paraphrase St. Francis: “Too-ra-loo-ra-loo! Much do I say, but little do I do!”
Why exactly am I constantly being referred to read this book or talk to that person, and THAT will explain everything? I’ve never once done this when presenting an argument. I know exactly what I think, and it’s never so complicated that I need to link you to a book about it.

Asimon,

If nobody takes the Bible to mean what it says, then you have talked to everybody.

Next how do you know that nobody takes it to mean what it says? Are you the arbiter?

The Creator provided a book and then Mortals study and offer counterintuitive interpretations. That is a tough one to swallow. It presupposes that those mortals are all uniform in their offering interpretation.

So if the book, interpreted by mortals offer counterintuitive interpretations and this is unacceptable then the other choice is to accept that we mortals are subject to the varying interpretations of reason without a book or guide of some sort.

It is a bad guide to living morally, and I said a SUBSTANTIAL fraction of 2 billion Muslims take it to mean what it says. And you’re lying about what I said regarding anal intercourse. Anything else?

Indeed. How would you react if Catholics today literally lived the entire Old Testament word-for-word, ASimon? Chances are that, as a non-believer, you wouldn’t even be here to chat with us…we’d have burned your city and taken your stuff a long time ago. 😃

Talking to a priest isn’t complicated at all. Generally, you start with “Heya Father” or “Good afternoon, sir (if you’re not a Catholic, I guess), I have some questions about the Bible and how it’s supposed to be read, can I have a few minutes of your time?”

What are you afraid of?

Opinion, unverified “fact”, and selective memory loss. Anything else? 👍

Yup. But at least you’d be Christians.

If you think the Koran is anything but a bad guide to living morally, then you’re insane. The fact has been long verified, and lying is still lying, and God frowns upon this. Or at least he did, once upon a time.

Well, I doubt that anyone has ever said that reading a certain book or talking to a priest or theologian will explain everything.

But the reason we do this is because we have this sublime treasury of 2000 years of theological jewels that you can divest yourself of.

You claim you’ve never had to do this because all you have is yourself and your own thoughts.

I don’t see that as a benefit myself. 🤷

It’s like a cook saying, “Why should I try Asian cuisine? I have my oatmeal. And my beets. And I’ve been quite happy with the recipes I’ve made with those 2 ingredients, thank you very much!”

What am I lying about? All I have to go by is what you’re saying, and you hate me, to judge by your tone and snark.

Also, remove the plank from your own eye before you remove the splinter in mine. That’s a Bible verse in context son, and if you’re going to be an arrogant and unfeeling jerk, you might want to learn the skill so that people here who are much, much more learned that you on the subject don’t keep chewing you up and spitting you out like a piece of stale Halloween candy.

I’m through being patient with you. Ignored.

On one level, it is about Leftist population control. Leftist billionaire George Soros funds endlessly the pro-homosexual and pro-samesex marriage activist groups, often several groups and organizations in just one state! Why is this?

Not too long ago, the Club of Rome came out with the statistics that the earth’s natural and mineral resources could not sustain more than 2.5 billion people! Humanist Manifesto II with this view in mind declared, “No Deity will save us. We must save ourselves.”

Hence, population control agendas grew and grew! Abortion was first on the list! Tens of millions of American babies have been aborted and their bloody remains sent to the billion-dollar-per-annum collage industry, even as you read this! (Talk about a culture of death, New Agers smear baby collagen cremes on their faces, believing it helps them to better communicate with their spirit guides!)

But it is not merely abortion which is part of the Satanic effort to bring the world’s pop. from nearly 7 billion down to 2.5 billion. ABORTION, EUTHANASIA, HOMOSEXUALITY, SAMESEX MARRIAGE, as well as military/industrial complex contrived wars and manmade viruses are part of the Leftist population control agenda.

Let’s put a stop to all this now with the New Evangelization and give those unwittingly duped by the liberal left the Good News of the Gospel to be freed from these bondages! Liberty must not be used for licentiousness!

Got it. But why do you say it’s a bad guide to living morally? Are you a former Muslim, or a scholar in this area? Just curious.

You complain about the Catholic definition of marriage yet you don’t have your own. You are just throwing a tantrum that you can not defend.
