The Host fell on my blouse today

I’ve been weirded out about it all day.

I don’t like receiving communion in the hand so I don’t receive it that way. With the H1N1 virus and local Churches making some minor changes (one of which I was REALLY grateful for - no holding hands during the “Our Father” - I hate to say this but I can’t stand it) the priest today was really trying not to touch my lips with his hands.

Next thing I know, I’m looking down and the Host had fallen on my blouse. I immediately picked it up and put it in my mouth. I started crying when I sat back down at the pew.

After mass I went to the priest and I thought I had calmed down but instead I burst out into tears. He pulled me aside (there was another woman there waiting to talk to him) and he told me I needed to stick my tongue out. I wasn’t doing that. He was doing his best to cheer me up. He told me about a time that when he was in seminary school he spilled a cup full of consecrated wine all over the place and felt horrible. Another priest told him that there are other people “out there” spilling His blood without a care in the world and that we should not beat ourselves up over it. He did say had the Host fallen on the floor he’d have immediately picked it up and consumed it and given me another one.

Still, I’ve been weirded out all after noon. It’s one of my greatest fears when receiving communion. I’ll be more conscientious of making sure my tongue is stuck out, hehe… next time.

I am posting here because I forgot to ask the pries at the time. Did I do the right thing by immediately taking it off my blouse and putting it in my mouth?

I don’t know why I’m so weirded out by this.

Yes, you absolutely did the right thing, since you saved the host from desecration by falling to the ground. As St. Thomas would say: “Necessity knows no law.”

Consider there is an indult in place that allows Communion in the Hand, then, no, you did nothing wrong.

Your Faith in the Real Presence is admirable 🙂

What’s the big deal? When I was an altar boy and the Host fell on the ground while receiving on the tongue, I just picked it up and put it in my mouth. Never thought anything of it.

Thanks, everyone. You’re helping me to feel better about this. 🙂

Oh, I dunno what the big deal is. Prolly because it is the body and blood of Jesus Christ and I do think a great deal of it. 😉

Yeah, but when it drops accidentally, it’s nothing to cry over. Jesus understands. 😃

Oh my!!! koff

I hate to say it, but I laughed watching this. At least for me it was OUTSIDE my blouse. Actually, it got caught in a fold so that it didn’t slide down onto the floor. The priest did tell me he CAN NOT pick it off my blouse. Even though it was outside.

So I guess we did better than that, right? 😃

It sounds like you’re feeling a little better about it? That’s good. I’m glad you posted this… it makes me wonder if I stick out my tongue? Probably not enough… but I will now!

God Bless! 🙂

See…so what happened to you was no big dealio! :D:D

Yes, I am feeling better about this. And I definitely do need to stick my tongue out more.

The thing for me is sometimes I attend an Eastern Rite Divine Liturgy with my boyfriend. They don’t stick their tongues out since communion is spooned onto the tongue. (bread mixed with wine.) We’re BOTH “coming back” to the church and practicing our faith now.

Can you imagine the reaction of the priest at Divine Liturgy when this Latin Rite girl walked up and, 1) said “Amen” rather than their usual response (that I can never remember) and then 2) stick my tongue ALL THE WAY out? LOL

Then I attend Latin Rite and I’m just opening my mouth and not sticking my tongue out. blah! I need to get the Rites straight. I think once I start attending on a regular basis I’ll start to get them straight.

When I was about ten, I went up in line to receive the Eucharist from the old Monsignor. He was standing on the first step of the altar (a bit higher than the congregation, and quite a bit higher up than a ten-year old). I had my hands in front of me, but so low that he couldn’t see them below his glasses.
He tried to put the host in my mouth. I tried to say, “No, in my hands.” He said, “Open your mouth, open your mouth,” as he tried to shove it in. To get out of the situation, I opened my mouth (the one and only time I’ve taken the host orally) and retreated very quickly to my seat. My mother, immediately behind me, witnessed the whole thing and came back, in tears, to sit next to me and pray for my soul.
I had offended the Monsignor and embarrassed my mother. I now believe the latter offence was the more grave. I also believe the Lord was probably relieved that the matter was resolved quickly and without bloodshed.
But, clearly, I’ve never forgotten the incident.

I don’t know why I bring it up here, but some of us seem to worry far too much about minor things.

Even without an indult it would have been alright. If you read some of the older Mass manuals, at the back in the section titled “Defects”/“Cautel”/etc. a.k.a. “101 scenarios and misfortunes that can happen to the Consecrated Species and ways of dealing with them” ;), specifically in cases like this where the host fell on the front of a blouse, or something, where it could not be retrieved by the priest for reasons of modesty, the layperson was to pick it up.

It is a great story of triumph over tragedy! 😃

My main worry was that the Host would fall on the floor. If was freaked out by this … oi!

I am feeling rather incorrigible right now so bear with me…

You know what I find so incredibly sad about this whole porkchop flu scare? Even if there was only one priest for 1000 miles, and he had this flu and so did everyother parisoner there’s nothing that would keep me from going to Mass and recieving the Eucharist (of course: unless I hadn’t been to confession in a month or so).

It’s just sad. I don’t know what the big deal… 36,000 people die from the regular flu every year in the United States. It’s one the biggest killers in the country. Makes me wonder what they used to do back when smallpox was still around… ahem… 35 years ago.

And, this is coming from a guy who’s grandmother lost 2 sisters and 3 of her friends in the Great Influenza Pandemic.

Yeah, see, I know the priest was trying to avoid touching my lips with his fingers.

Now, first let me say this… I am immune compromised, so I get rather squicked out by touching other people or having them touch me. I don’t really like shaking hands. When I get sick, I. Get. SICK. :hypno:

Now, there’s a greater paranoia. I do believe it’s a hyped-up paranoia by marketers of pharmaceuticals and cleanser products companies.

So… not much more to say, but, well, there you go. hehe 😛
