We read in Genesis,
1:27 And God created man to his own image: to the image of God he created him: male and female he created them.
What do we make of this? Genesis seems to be asserting that the image of God is male and female.
There are a few parallels to this in other religions. In Gaudiya Vaishnava Hinduism, there is Krishna, whom they say is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and Radha, who is His Pleasure Potency expanded to the form of his consort. Radha, they say, is actually identical with Krishna, so, this is an actual image of God, male and female.
The Wiccans, too, are Bitheistic. They believe that there is a God and Goddess, whose interplay manifests as everything in the world. Or something like that.
But it is interesting that in Catholicism, there is Mary and Jesus, her Son. Jesus is considered God but not Mary. Yet, Mary is the perfect image of God, more perfect than any other human being. Saint Joseph, too, was the image of God the Holy Spirit, since he is Mary’s True Spouse, and she is considered the Spouse of the Holy Spirit.
The Mother and the Father — the Matter and the Pattern. This is the Image of God. There is the male and the female, and the love between them — the Image of the Blessed Trinity.
