Prodromos,

I think on this issue Catholic/orthodox differences are mostly matters of semantics. Did you see the Eastern Catholic link I posted earlier?

I disagree. I believe there are fundamental differences in what we believe.

Do you mind posting the link again.

John.

Yes, the views are different…not just different wording. We both agree that all humans inherit the effects of original sin…but the Catholic Church teaches that all humans also inherit the guilt of original sin, while the EOC does not.

If “Original Sin” is understood as a state that is conducive to sin, then yes, otherwise how could Hebrews 4:15 be true.
I’ve never heard this definition of Original Sin. So, Original Sin is not a Sin? Hmmm… I disagree with your assertation as it applies to Hebrews 4:15. Yes, Jesus was certainly tempted by Sin, no one disputes that. What we were talking about was Original Sin, which the RCC teaches we are all born with, the Sin that we have becuase of Adam and Eve’s turning from God. Jesus had no original sin, he was sinless. But just because Jesus was not born with original Sin, doesn’t mean he couldn’t conquer it. I’m sure that Jesus wasn’t tempted with every possible type of Sin ever thought of (although he did take upon himself all of our Sins), yet he saves us from it all.

Orthodox do not believe babies are born guilty of sin. Rather, they are born with a tendancy towards sin (which Adam and Eve did not originally have). Thus, to have “original sin” does not automatically mean you have sinned so it does not preclude Mary being pure.
Do the Orthodox do infant baptism? If they do, then what is the point? Do you only baptise after you know the first sin is committed?

Baptism is not simply the washing away of sin, it is participating in the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, putting to death the “old man” and being born anew in Christ Jesus. It is through Baptism, Chrismation and Communion that we become members of the body of Christ. Why on earth would we deny that to our children?

John 6:53-56
Jesus therefore said to them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Unless ye shall have eaten the flesh of the Son of man, and drunk his blood, ye have no life in yourselves. He that eats my flesh and drinks my blood has life eternal, and I will raise him up at the last day: for my flesh is truly food and my blood is truly drink. He that eats my flesh and drinks my blood dwells in me and I in him.

Again, why would we deny full membership in the body of Christ and all its benefits to our children?

The Catholic Church does not teach this.
