So where do you draw the line? Not all movies are bad, some are quite enlightening. I actually use The Lego Movie as an example of how complimentarity is supposed to exist in human relationships, and recommend it to couples I prepare for marriage. I think it’s got a good lesson.
Do you also think books are problematic in this way? What kind of books? I find reading novels very helpful to my preaching, as it helps to refine my use of language and ability to express myself. I find different kinds of writing, both the more elegant and even the more “fun” to help me better see and express truth.
St. Paul advised Timothy “test everything, hold on to what is good.” If I can watch The Incredibles and find some way to convey the truth of the Gospel through what happens on screen, then isn’t that money and time well spent? God speaks to us in the obvious places–the Mass, the Sacraments, the Sacred Scriptures, and in prayers. But he also speaks to us anywhere the truth is spoken, and our culture, even at its most broken, still speaks the truth in some way. A broken mirror still reflects light.
