Hello everyone,

I’ve wanted to start reading a bit about Church history and the Inquisitions came to my attention. For many, this is considered a “black eye” for the church, I guess.

Here’s the trouble I’m having though: I hear how bad the church was from non-catholic sources, but then hear how the church is actually portrayed in a darker light than it is due, but only from Catholic sources. I’d kind of like to find a source that discusses the topic from a neutral viewpoint, that will present what history says rather than legends/myths/unsupported accusations and assessments.

Does anyone have anything along these lines that will get me started in a good direction?

Thank you very much,

This is an academic-standard site - a collection of primary-source documents - that was recommended to me by my lecturer when studying Medieval History a couple of years ago. Jesuit University too.

Enjoy!

The Medieval Inquisition by Bernard Hamilton is very good, though out of print, so you would need to try to get a hold of a used copy.

An excellent place to start is with “Fire & Sword: Crusade, Inquisition - CD”. You can get it from St. Joseph Communications. Or you can try “Matthew Arnold’s Fire & Sword: The Crusades” also on CD and also from St. Joseph Communications.

Just wondering, as a little preview, how does this resource (as well as any others mentioned above) describe the church during this time? How is the church presented?

It’s information taken in context and does not make the Church look bad. They describe things as they historically were, good and bad. In all actuality, the version of history commonly proliferated today was started in the 16 and 1700s by protestants and has never been forcefully corrected by the Church who doesn’t feel a need to defend itself against lies and misconceptions. The deaths contributed to the Church didn’t happen, they were political executions, not religious ones and were enforced by those in political power, not the Church. The same can be said about the Crusades. I just wish everyone would check into the REAL story and not just accept what you heard in school as facts. Just like the story you were taught about the so called Dark Ages that, if you really researched them, weren’t all that dark nor backwards.
