Good question; one that takes God’s grace and faith to comprehend.

The bible is God’s tool; it is NOT the totality of God’s desires, God’s teachings; or God’s desire to have us learn and live fully His Faith.

The Bible exist for the Church; NOT the Church exist by or for the Bible.🙂 The Bible is a tool to teach us the MEANING of our existence; and the meaning of man’s right relationship with our God. These are the messages to be culled; and to be learned and applied to our lives. The rest is just filler. Important; BUT NOT critical to our salvation:thumbsup:

So what about the census Joseph and Mary had to register for? There supposedly wasn’t a census at that time. Or something.
 
Would Qurinius have been governor or “leading or in charge of” as the article says, during the birth of Christ?
It says he was leading military action between 12 and 2 b c. When was Christ born?
And is there a good reason to believe there was a census at that time?
 
The Hebrews thought of these waters as being contained above the solid sheet of the firmament. Medieval cosmology posited an “aqueous sphere” beyond the heaven of fixed stars. I myself have read, and continue to read bible studies from some incredibly talented, highly educated bible historians. I use several concordances, bible dictionaries, and greek/english dictionaries. I fully agree that Holy Scripture has to be understood within the full textual and historical context. However, as Catholics we view Sola Scriptura" as heresy. Instead, the Catholic Church itself was created by our Lord Jesus Christ and maintains and safe guards both Holy Scripture and Holy Tradition, the other part of the Word of God spoken of within Holy Scripture (see 2 Thessalonians 2:15). It is Holy Tradition that gives full context to Holy Scripture.

One must not confuse Holy Tradition with the many man made traditions of the Catholic Church. To understand what is Holy Tradition I suggest the following book:

Tradition and the Church Paperback (1928) by Monsignor George Agius.

The Bible communicates exactly what God wanted to communicate and does so without error. Sometimes people think that the Bible communicates things such as history or science when God had no intent to communicate those things.

God gave us the Bible for the salvation of our souls. Everything in the Bible having to do with the salvation of our souls is without error.
