Greetings all!
Just a thought I’ve been kicking around for a while: Would it be disrespectful to say the Rosary in my head? I mean, think about how many you could say in 1 day! At work, in the car, on the bus… No actual Rosary in hand, though. One could honor God and get the hectic everyday junk done at once. I do say the Rosary ‘mentally’ sometimes as I go to sleep.
What’s the consensus? (sp?)
Cheers,
~Laura

I am not sure I am getting the question. Most of the time the rosary is mental prayer, unless you are in a group and reciting the prayers out loud. am I missing something?

The rosary is a prayer of contemplation, and contemplation needs no prayer beads or rocks or other instruments of counting. So yes you may pray the rosary in your head.

Code:
I think she means not having to hold the rosary beads as she mentally prays the rosary.

Hmmm. What I’m getting at is that I do this all in my head. Especially when this 1 girl at work gets crabby with me. But that’s off point. I think of it as a way of living out the ‘pray ceaselessly’ idea that some Church noble promoted.
OK, I think I have it: Is it disrespectful to say the Rosary while you do other things? (With no actual Rosary.)
Yeah, that sounds better.

No, it’s not disrespectful at all. Our works must be united with our prayers, after all.

Here’s a little something I wrote about the Rosary: blogsofasoul.blogspot.com/2008/10/on-crown-of-martyrydom.html
I just checked out your blog. I LOVE it! And…bookmarked!

As far as praying the rosary without a rosary, I certainly hope you can. I pray it while I wash dishes. I pray it while I change poopy diapers (Mary changed poopy diapers too. She understands that moms need to multi-task:thumbsup: )
I pray it while I’m driving to and from work.
I pray it while I’m AT work (which I probably shouldn’t :o )
I read somewhere (maybe even on ask an apologist) that mother theresa’s nuns prayed while they walked through the streets.
Though the logistics of it can be tricky…I lose track of how many hail marys I did, so I will just start a task, say, doing the dishes and start with an our father, and then say hail marys til I’m done, and then when i finish say the glory be. So, I figure it’s saying ther Rosary with some ‘bonus’ Hail Marys.🙂

I am humbled. 😊 Thank you. 🙂

Eucharisted…yes, I agree…that is an awesome blog and I have alos bookmarked it. Thank you for sharing.👍
mellowcheddar…I often say the Rosary without my Rosary beads. 😉

God gave us 10 fingers for a reason 😉
Seriously! I pray the Rosary daily. Quite often it’s while driving the kids from point A to point B. Sometimes while getting a toddler to sleep. Frequently while nursing, when there is a nursling in the house. It’s no accident that our fingers = a decade.

Instances of doing nothing except sitting or kneeling, beads in hand, praying the rosary, are pretty few and far between for me. Treasured moments, to be sure, but just not very frequent at this point in my life with a houseful of kids. Mostly on retreats…

PS A now deceased-friend was fond of quoting Chesterton in this regard: anything worth doing is worth doing badly.😃 In other words, the worst rosary is the one you don’t say. I think Our Lady is far more pleased with our imperfect rosaries recited in imperfect conditions than she would be with a refusal to say it except under ideal circumstances.

“…that mother theresa’s nuns prayed while they walked through the streets.

I love it, and even more the the trickiness of it!

I stop and come back every time I was distracted. I help myself by trying to see in front of me, up in the sky, the mental image of the mistery I am meditating on: it is beautiful, Jesus ascending in Heaven behind that building, or Mary gloriously reigning in the middle of the afternoon sky…

As I am easily distracted and will not be happy with a prayer saying whilst thinking of anything else than the actual words of the prayer or the mystery I am supposed to meditate upon, it generally takes 45 to 65 minutes. “Bonus” Aves aplenty, but again if I am to make my garland, I want Mary to get a beautiful one.

Besides being a useful exercise in concentration, it is very healthy.

To me, though, it has another meaning: an exercise of surrender to Jesus and Mary in willful preference to all the beauty of creation: the decision to not look look at the shop window, to not direct my attention on that beautiful car, or to the beautiful detail of that building, etc.

When it does not work, I start from where my mind had gone astray, again and again.

I vastly prefer it to the rosary said at home, on the sofa, with closed eyed. But again, I love to walk too…

Yeah, there’s nothing wrong with that. I probably wouldn’t do it while driving in the car because you need concentration on the road.
