Clement of Alexandria’s “Exhortation to the Heathen” was written, according to a footnote in my text, partly to combat the tendency of the surrounding culture to take God lightly and regard things pertaining to the gods with levity. In that culture the ancient Greeks and Romans weren’t always taking the old gods seriously, and part of the reason Clement wrote was to defend the new Christianity against a humorous regard. A barrier to the Gospel was an inability to treat these matters with anything but levity and not see the Gospel as anything of practical importance. One of the hallmarks of present culture is that God is funny, if ever thought of, and irreverence is in, and the Gospel is of course useless if not downright evil. I need not cite sources.
Has anyone read this work with an eye towards analyzing it for effective apologetics today? I think we can learn from someone who defended the early church successfully. I have about ten feet of bookshelf to read through so I’m not going back but I’m wondering if anyone else has. If not, maybe someone should.
