The stand-up guy, and stand-up comic, is producing a TV series based on his life, set to premiere this summer on TV Land.

In contrast to another recently-announced show about a Catholic family, this one doesn’t present religion as a problem to be mocked —except, perhaps, by people who are small-minded and intolerant. The pilot is full of the foibles and challenges facing a comic who happens to be Christian. It’s knowing, whimsical, a little irreverent. The Church here is more than a punchline or a punching bag; it’s part of the every day life of the Gaffigan clan. This is a Catholicism I think a lot of people will recognize and appreciate. I know I did.

More importantly, the first episode goes where no sitcom has gone before: it challenges how show business treats religion, and does it in a way that’s both frank and, frankly, funny.

A description of the premise:
Written by Gaffigan and his wife, Jeannie Gaffigan, the series follows the formula that’s been working well for other comedian shows like Louie and Maron. On The Jim Gaffigan Show the comedian plays a fictional version of himself joined by the likes of Ashley Williams (How I Met Your Mother) playing his wife Jeannie, Adam Goldberg playing Dave, a fellow comedian and Michael Ian Black as Gaffigan’s gay friend Daniel, who is also his wife’s ex-boyfriend.
The first episode follows the fall-out of Gaffigan being exposed as a Christian after a fan shares a photo of him holding a bible on social media. Quite an eccentric list of guest stars appear in the episode, including everyone from Jon Stewart and Chris Rock to Nancy Grace and Glenn Beck.
The Jim Gaffigan Show will officially premiere on TV Land Wednesday, July 15 at 10 p.m. with replays set to air on Comedy Central.

I’ve liked Gaffigan’s comedy for years, from watching clips on YouTube. I don’t know what denomination he is. I’m curious to see how this plays out.
 
Yup. He’s uber Catholic. He speaks of it in his routines sometimes, very funny.
We love him!
His humor is not peppered with expletives. Doesn’t need them. Just plain funny.

He was on a TBS series called “My Boys” about a female sports writer and her circle of male friends, which aired from 2006-2010. That’s where I first became aware of him (although I had seen him do standup on tv before). I’ve also heard him interviewed on NPR.
 
I knew he was Christian, but I guess I thought he was Protestant because I never came across anything specifically Catholic In his clips I saw, although he made Bible references. That, and he performed at a local evangelical church near me (but they have an enormous auditorium). Sadly, I didn’t get to go see him at the time.
 
He is my wife’s favorite comedian. I find him funny, but not as much as my wife does.

I think he mentions being Catholic in several of his stand up routines.

One of my favorite bits of his is the one on natural childbirth. Since that’s the kind of crunchy we are, too, it just…nails it.

I find that a lot of stand-up rubs me the wrong way because it’s obvious the comic doesn’t know much about the topic (at most some worn out stereotypes). But Jim Gaffigan definitely knows his topics well, and that includes religion.

He specializes in observational humor, drawn mainly from his own family life. Also, his humor usually centers around food.

One of his more famous projects was one called ‘Pale Force’ that “featured” Conan O’Brien.
