The Catholic view is that, no matter how well-intentioned this is, it is the product of private interpretation of prophecy, which is prohibited by the bible (2 Peter 1:20). I simply cannot get past the biblical prohibition against private interpretation of prophecy.

Well that’s your Catholic view.

Please consider being more charitable about your personal views or beliefs in context of the post ; otherwise, you make yourself appear cloak-and-dagger ; that is, concealing a hidden motive / agenda by baiting others in to a fixed or constructed argument wherein you can prevail your views upon them. In Law, this is known as “bait and switch,” and is illegal when your trying to sell something.

Sadly, he’s probably been taught that Catholics are going to hell for their ‘mindless attachment to pagan traditions’…

I watched all 12 episodes. Very interesting. But I caught him in a lie, which makes me discount everything he says. He claims that the pope says that he is “God almighty upon the earth”. That is not true. He is refering to a quote from a translation of a papal encyclical by Pope Leo XIII:
PRAECLARA GRATULATIONIS PUBLICAE
THE REUNION OF CHRISTENDOM
Apostolic Letter of Pope Leo XIII
June 20, 1894
…A great deal, however, has been wanting to the entire fullness of that consolation. Amidst these very manifestations of public joy and Reverence Our thoughts went out towards the immense multitude of those who are strangers to the gladness that filled all Catholic hearts: some because they lie in absolute ignorance of the Gospel; others because they dissent from the Catholic belief, though they bear the name of Christians.
This thought has been, and is, a source of deep concern to Us; for it is impossible to think of such a large portion of mankind deviating, as it were, from the right path, as they move away from Us, and not experience a sentiment of innermost grief.
But since We hold upon this earth the place of God Almighty, Who will have all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the Truth, and now that Our advanced age and the bitterness of anxious cares urge Us on towards the end common to every mortal, We feel drawn to follow the example of Our Redeemer and Master, Jesus Christ, Who, when about to return to Heaven, implored of God, His Father, in earnest Prayer, that His Disciples and followers should be of one mind and of one heart: I pray . . . that they all may be one, as Thou Father in Me, and I in Thee: that they also may be one in Us. And as this Divine Prayer and Supplication does not include only the souls who then believed in Jesus Christ, but also every one of those who were henceforth to believe in Him, this Prayer holds out to Us no indifferent reason for confidently expressing Our hopes, and for making all possible endeavors in order that the men of every race and clime should be called and moved to embrace the Unity of Divine Faith.
It is obvious from the context of this statement (which was not made in English) that Pope Leo is saying that he holds the “place” (the authority) of God on earth, not the he IS God. This may be difficult for non-Catholics to understand, but it is completely in keeping with the commission that Jesus gave to Peter:
And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”
  • Matthew 16:19
Jesus was alluding to Isaiah 22:20-22
20 ‘ Then it shall be in that day,
That I will call My servant Eliakim the son of Hilkiah;
21 I will clothe him with your robe
And strengthen him with your belt;
I will commit your responsibility into his hand.
He shall be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem
And to the house of Judah.
22 The key of the house of David
I will lay on his shoulder;
So he shall open, and no one shall shut;
And he shall shut, and no one shall open.
The pope holds the “keys to the kingdom”, and is thereby the regent of the Kingdom while the King is away. So he does indeed hold the authority of God on earth.

Michael Rood is a liar. I don’t like liars.

Pardon me, didn’t notice.

Well when I saw this video I was astonished. I was a former Catholic, it did hurt me see this video, I was mad, I must confess. But when I took the time to think about it, I said I may be mad but it is the truth. There are pagan origins in traditions we as Christians (Not only Catholics) celebrate, and we don’t even notice. I recommend people to watch the whole 5 discs , it is also nice to know about Jewish Tradition that were in fact given by God.

He was making fun, if you didn’t notice, but anyways if what you say is true then:

I say to you that “Jesus is the Messiah and then tell you the Earth is bigger than the Sun”. I lied, but the other things I said are also lie?

So it is a lie that the Sun God was born on the 25 of December? It is a lie there are a lot of pagan things in our traditions? Be honest.

And I agree with you the problem is, how does someone know it is private interpretation, maybe he did studied prophecies with a group of people, how do you know it is private interpretation. Secondly he is talking about prophecies already fulfilled (ex: Jesus is the Messiah that was to come).

People celebrate traditions because they think that is the way it is supposed to be celebrated. They do it innocently, therefore is not a sin. However when you know something is bad and do it is a sin. And you forgot he is talking bout all Christians in general. After all protestants did kept traditions from the Catholic Church.

My friend, let’s not pick a fight, it’s beneath you.
I posted it in “Non-Catholic Religions”.
I don’t want to start a fight, when I said that is his Catholic view, I was saying there were going to be other Catholics who were going to actually view the video and give me there views.

God bless.

The origins of certain traditions being pagan does not discount them. Nor should I think anyone should suddenly become “upset” by such a revelation. It is far easier to evangelize in a foreign culture, especially when that culture shares almost no cultural similarities, by adapting the MESSAGE of Christ to that culture than forcing your cultural traditions onto them as the means by which you profess the message.

Look at the dozens of sui iuris rites within the Catholic Church. They are obviously different than the Latin Rite, but they are no less valid. Likewise, look at the way the Church celebrates in Asia, or sub-saharan Africa. So long as the celebration is liturgically correct and the priest holds a valid ordination, they can incorporate traditions of the local culture into their celebration. It really annoys me when people point to Christmas or Easter and claim “you stole those from the pagans, therefore, it’s not Christian” despite the historical fact that these would have been celebrated by the majority of Northern European converts regardless of how Mass was said, and it is only natural that they would eventually become incorporated into the local church, and later, the Church as a whole.

My friend, you have been duped. The video is full of misinformation and out right fabrication.

Here’s an example* (Full disclosure: I watched some of these videos, but had to stop for fear of intracranial explosion)*:

.The Austrian Hospice of the Holy Familyhttp://www.n1559.com/JerusalemPhotos09/Jerusalem/ChurchHolyFamilyHotel.jpg

Michael Rood claims this picture is of Joseph of Arimathea, Mary Magdalene, and the illegitimate son of Jesus!

Ludicrous.

Note again the name of the place: The Austrian Hospice*** of the Holy Family***!!!
Yet he presents this as fact with no evidence whatsoever…

If I had more time, I’d point out his misrepresentation of Isaiah’s prophesy of the destruction of Damascus, and his mis-quotes of bible passages among other things.

Pardon me, didn’t notice.

It is nice to know the historical roots of some of our traditions, especially those that come from the nation of Israel. 👍

I haven’t made it through all of the videos. What is it that made you mad? I can see some minor anoyance at the twisting of facts and scripture but not enough to elicit anger.

It’s absolutely true. Every Catholic who knows anything knows this (which means you never understood anything). True Christianity does not destroy cultures - it transforms them into the likeness of Christ. It is perfectly okay, since we have no idea when Jesus was born, to celebrate His holy birth on a day that was already a feast day in Western (Roman) culture. The Church succeeded in transforming a pagan festival into a Holy Day of Christianity. Is this not a good thing?

I will agree on one point: I would not worship a God who could not even take an egg out of the hands of a Roman or other pagan who has been dead for maybe three millennia and give it to His children to use to glorify His name. The cross itself was even more than a pagan symbol, it was the means for shame and torture before a public death. Somehow that seems to have changed. Maybe we need to remove crosses from our necks and our altars because some Roman could claim dibs on it.

As for the painting of the Holy Family. note the nimbus around the woman’s head. Mary Magdalene was never portrayed with a nimbus. She had uncovered and untied hair. a perfume bottle and a skull. She often was dressed all in red of having a red cloak. This came about as a result of the conflation of the adulteress being stoned, the woman who washed Jesus’ feet with her hair, and Mary Magdalene being described by Luke in a following passage as having been possessed by demons by Pope Gregory the Great. After that sermon, artists portrayed Mary Magdalene as I have described. For a contemporary example, look at Goya’s different paintings of Mary Magdalene. Though they may have been illiterate when the Hospice of the Holy Family was built, not one Austrian peasant would have mistaken Mary the Mother of Jesus for Mary Magdalene.

To the OP: The CROSS! Pagan symbol of the painful death of criminals. The universal sign of shame. Did not Jesus convert it, through His Blood, to the universal symbol of eternal life and hope? It WAS a Pagan symbol, remember. By your newfound “logic”, you must therefore reject all images of the cross. You may have to tear the cover off your bible and burn it. Consider just how silly this “logic” is.
