Just a quick note to let all my fellow Catholic Answers readers know that my wife and I are expecting our 6th child this June. Our more faith-filled Christian friends are very supportive but sadly our own family (most of whom are nominal or non-practising) would think we’re crazy (of course). :whacky: and this is why most of them don’t know yet.

My wife is soon to be 43 years old and she is tired. Please pray for us, but especially for her and for our little unborn baby. We are an NFP couple for the past 10 years and I am growing a little disenchanted with the procedure. I haven’t lost hope in the reliability of NFP completely, but am having my doubts as to how reliable it is with pre-menepausal women. Any thoughts?:hmmm:

Please try to keep in mind that with God, there are no accidents. Every one of your children, including those who are “unexpected” from our human point of view, is fully known to God, and He has a plan already, for their lives.
 
First off congratulations… and many prayers for your wife and little baby!

I have no experience or education in NFP during pre-menopause… but I would highly suggest being in regular contact with an NFP instructor to help you and your wife in this area (help with interpreting charts, looking for unique signs, etc)…

As far as pre-menopausal NFP goes, what method are you using? You might want to try a different one. For me, with hormonal issues anyway, Creighton works best, since it doesn’t rely on temps–which can often be misleading in themselves when the hormones are fluctuating. Good luck in finding something that works for you both!

Were you following NFP to the letter, every month? My husband and I are in the beginning stages of learning NFP, and are wondering if I will be pregnant into my 40’s, if we are off here and there?
 
I suggest you contact a Creighton instructor if you are having pre-menopause issues with NFP charting.

Thanks for your replies, everyone! It is my understanding that your chances of pregnancy diminish greatly after 35 but that hasn’t been the case with my wife and I. We had our last child 2 years ago when my wife was 40. My name, Joseph, in Hebrew means “he shall add” and that obviously is my destiny.

As for following the technique to letter, I must confess that the answer is probably “no”. My wife works a lot of shifts in a hospital and sometimes we didn’t chart for a few days. We had previously used the technique accurately for about 5 years but had grown a little lax.

I also know that with God there are no “accidents” and I have slowly come to accept His will, albeit sometimes a little grudginly. Thanks for your prayers :gopray2: and support. :grouphug:

**It is my understanding that fertility decreases at that age for women who have not previously had children. Like those women who put career first and get married in their mid thirties and think that it will be easy to start a family. But it seems like once you start your body continues until menopause or close to:shrug:

Hi again JDI;

My husband and I didn’t follow to the letter when we followed it either (back in my 20’s) and we had our son.:o I tell people we followed NFP, but I should mention that little caveat haha Good luck to you and your wife–God is always up to something amazing!🙂

Coincidentally, I am the 6th (and last) in my family, and my mom was almost 44. I will pray for your wife to have a safe pregnancy and birth, and for your family. :gopray2:
 
We thought my wife was pregnant at 42. It was scary and shocking, but by the time her period came, I was incredibly sad about it. I have my doubts about NFP, but accept my heartfelt CONGRATULATIONS! Yours, RACJ 👍

The chances of getting pregnant for the first time diminish after the age of 35. But, once the womb is opened, the kids just keep piling out (as you’ve noticed). The younger a woman is when she starts having children, the longer she will remain fertile. 🙂
 
Congrats!!!

We have 6 children and it truly is wonderful (most days 😃 ). I’m only 36, so there are fertile years ahead and we’re not sure what that means for us, but that’s okay.

I would say finding a method that works for your wife’s situation is key, and it sounds like creighton might be it.

Or a refresher/premenpausal/postpartem 😛 class in whatever method you are using.

Congratulations! My husband and I stink at NFP so have now left it up to God, LOL. I’m just not disciplined enough and don’t really feel we have grave reason anyway. For us to avoid pregnancy we would have to be really strict. I have friends that do have grave reason and are in constant contact with an NFP teacher. They follow the strictist rules that there are. I’m often reluctant to tell people that we use NFP b/c I’m afraid they’ll go running from it when they see our (soon to be) eight kids! LOL. Anyway - good luck and congrats!
