After I visited their memorial service (their annual "communion service) and made sure they knew they were welcome to come study with me, this afternoon they finally showed up!

After the general introductions we got to the studying part. In a fairly short time the conversation came around to how many times their New World Translation uses the word Jehovah in the Old Testament and also in the New Testament. They said their translators went ahead and put Jehovah in the NT anywhere there was a quote from the OT where Jehovah would be in the Hebrew text.

Since they had brought up such a delightful topic, I asked them if they realized just how much the NT quotes from the Greek Septuagint rather than any Hebrew text in it’s use of the Old Testament. I pulled my LXX off the bookshelf and started telling them the history of it and how it was practically the primary OT used by almost all Christians for the first couple hundred years. I noted that in the LXX they didn’t typically use the word Jehovah. I told them how the Jews banned the LXX because too many were converting to Christianity because of it!

They wanted to explain to me about the Kingdom of God where this earth would become made new again. They lamented that the Christian world in general didn’t seem to think of a literal kingdom with Christ reigning and others such as the apostles under him, in a kind of government. I told them that the variety of Christianity I’m involved with right now (Orthodox Christian) has definitely not forgotten about the concept of “kingdom” at all. I told them that in my church we hear a whole lot about two of the main things Jesus spoke about the most… “repent” and the “kingdom”.

I asked them where they thought the apostle Paul is right now and what he’s doing. They said he’s in heaven right now and reigning with Christ. I asked them when they thought he went there. They said sometime around 1918-1919 A.D… I told them that the earliest Christian writings outside of the Bible I could find put the Apostle Paul reigning with Christ already. I read the appropriate section out of 1st Clement and explained the history of 1st Clement, that it was written from the Church at Rome to the Church at Corinth to straighten up some troubles there. They said the general apostasy was well underway by 95 A.D. and that Clement was not inspired since it wasn’t in the Bible. I told them that in many places Clement was being read in church along with the other books of the NT and it took a few hundred years before it was decided what was to be read in church and what wasn’t. I told them that in my church, we still do the “reading in church” and they asked if it was like when Jesus read the passage from Isaiah and they said “today this is fulfilled in your hearing”? I told them that’s precisely what I meant. I told them it was unique how I can see little cultural things and phrases in the Bible which didn’t used to mean anything to me but now that I’ve seen them in action I understand. I told them a Christian or Jew from 200 A.D. could walk into my church and they’d know where they were.

Eventually their time was up and they had to leave, but I made sure they knew they were welcome to return!

I’ve always wanted to argue with JW’s about the nature of the Tetragrammaton and it’s use in the 3rd commandment, but every time I meet one it’s some sweet little old lady.

I think you could make a decent argument that trying to decipher and use the “true name” of God is the only real way to violate the 3rd commandment.

It just so happens that my family has probably a 15 year reputation with the local JW’s and now that they know I’ve left SDAism they think there might be a chance at me. So they send their biggest guns my way. 😃

You should ask them how they know it’s not Yahweh or Johovoh or Yihiwah or Juhuvooh

To me this seems like an inconsequential little issue. I’d like for them to become attracted to real Christianity some way. We need to discuss really big issues but things that make them realize their version of Christianity doesn’t actually compare with the New Testament church which they believe they are replicating. At the same time, I need to come across in a way where they know I’m actually listening to them… nobody likes to teach or listen to a know-it-all and they are coming to try and teach me.

Sorry, I didn’t realize you actually cared if they like you.

I realize not everybody wants to be liked by the JW’s…🙂

But I was SDA and people making what I thought were crude jokes about my religion or teasing me did not make me want to even consider what they were saying. I might possibly have listened if they were nice about it, though.

I actually would like to be able to positively infuence these JW’s.

Well they do sort of make a big deal out of the whole “calling God Jehovah” thing, and I’m pretty sure that even people who speak Hebrew don’t know exactly how the tetragrammaton was pronounced.

Which means the tetragrammaton served its purpose, incidentally…

i wish they would come to my door but they never do. i always see them, or moroms (they dress the same), riding their bikes with their helmets on up the street. i really want to ask them about the Blessed Mother.

Reply,

What you are not telling the readers, is that their are surviving copies or parts of the Greek LXX which written in Greek retain the Hebrew Tetragrammaton and that the LXX suffered the same fate as very early copies of the NT, which quoted directly from the original Hebrew or early copies of the LXX and that the Divine Name was surrogated by church leaders, who were developing proto-Trinitarian ideas, under the influence of Greek philosophy and metaphysics and in modern bibles (most) we see the same trend the NIV deliberately omitted God’s name for the love of money, the Catholic hierarchy I am told, forbids the use of the Name in Catholic services…!

Pope Forbids Catholics From Using Actual Name of God: Yahweh
By Nancy Frazier O’Brien
Catholic News Service

WASHINGTON (CNS) – In the not-too-distant future, songs such as “You Are Near,” “I Will Bless Yahweh” and “Rise, O Yahweh” will no longer be part of the Catholic worship experience in the United States.

At the very least, the songs will be edited to remove the word “Yahweh” – a name of God that the Vatican has ruled must not “be used or pronounced” in songs and prayers during Catholic Masses."

How far removed from Jesus words ““YOU must pray, then, this way:
“‘Our Father in the heavens, let your name be sanctified.” Math 6:9 NWT

“I have made your name known to them and will make it known” John 17:26 NWT

We for our part will continue to make the Holy Name of the Father known to all that will hear it!

What a far cry from the words of Jesus himself!

The Divine Name occurs nearly 7,000 times and here is an orginization that says she is in a covenant relationship, and with whom; with a God with no name?:mad::mad::mad::mad:
