I have sweet friends who believe this guy.
Any comments?
Today’s Verse: “I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in Heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in Heaven” (Matthew 16:19, NIV).
Today’s Word:
Keys represent access. They represent authority. Whether it’s a key to a building, car, or safety deposit box; if you’ve been given a key to something, it means you have a right to use it. You have access to whatever that key will open.
Friend, because of Jesus, we have the keys to the kingdom of heaven! We have access to all the heavenly blessings and promises that are in the Word of God. And, we have the authority to take hold of those promises.
Are you using the keys that you have been given—the keys of faith and the power of your words and actions? No matter what you may have need of—be it physical healing, provision, wholeness, freedom from addiction—you have been given the authority to access it in Jesus’ Name! Take hold of those promises by faith and begin to declare that every need is met according to His riches in glory. Take a step of faith today and use those keys you have been given to take hold of every blessing God has in store for you!
Prayer for Today: Father God, thank You for giving me access to every promise and blessing in heaven. By faith, right now I receive everything You have for me. Help me stay focused on Your Word which empowers me to live in the victory You have in store for me. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

He would be better off being a Christian self-help counselor, which is legitimate, than appearing to be a charlatan.

The keys of the kingdom refer to Jesus giving the apostle St. Peter authority over his church on earth in St. Matthew’s Gospel aka first pontiff and gatekeeper of heaven
We achieve prosperity by working and working with each other; we are social creature connected and influenced by one another;
Joel Osteen gives false hope to thise who listen to him; He doesn’t talk about the real genuine relevant topics like other priests such as abortion, aids, promiscuity, contraception, hell, purgatory, sin, among other things. He makes people feel good about THEMSELVES. Real preachers wake up congregations about the state of things in the world physical and spiritual not detract from them. Joel Osteen is only out there as a media whore to make a quick buck. He is FAR from what Jesus was. Jesus was a poor man who didn’t have much on this earth (He didn’t have mansions, private jets, cars on earth) instead he said his kingdom was in Heaven where our treasures should be layed up where moth nor rust destroy. Jesus also woke up everyone by condemning the religous hypocrites of his day who made profits and changed the laws. For this Jesus was crucified by the Jews. Joel Osteen is a wolve in sheeps clothing who seeks the ruin of souls for profit like Benny Hinn, Billy Graham, Creflo Dollar et cetera. We should pray and alert Catholic-Christians who are vulnerable…

Correct me if I am wrong but doesn’t the text say the keys were given to one person and one person only?
That’s how the Catholic Church “interprets” it. Let’s go to the word and check it out.

And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, 13 and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.
19
I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. 14 Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."

so the answer to your question, is YES. Jesus said to PETER, “I will give YOU the keys to the kingdom.”

Interesting theology where you can pull a verse out of its original context in order to say something completely different than God’s intended meaning.

Why does it seem so obvious? :banghead:

I agree with you partly, but I think Billy Graham should be removed from your list though. He might be the last bastion of not for profit big-scale evangelists. I’m sure he’s doing well, but he does preach conversion and holiness.

He was right up to this point
Keys represent access. They represent authority. Whether it’s a key to a building, car, or safety deposit box; if you’ve been given a key to something, it means you have a right to use it. You have access to whatever that key will open.
After this, he falls of a bridge trying to apply Jesus giving the Keys to Peter by saying this symbolizes Jesus giving the Keys to everybody. But that’s not what Christ did, is it?

I’m not a Billy Grahm experpt, but everything I know about him suggests a very genuine sincerity.

Hmmm Today’s Reading:

Matthew 7:24-29
24 “Everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock.
(Peter, i.e., The Catholic Church ,Matthew 16:18 And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. 19 I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”**)

25 The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and buffeted the house. But it did not collapse; it had been set solidly on rock. *
(Peter and *Apostolic succession all the way to our current Pope Benedict XVI)

26 And everyone who listens to these words of mine but does not act on them will be like a fool who built his house on sand. *
(Protestantism)*

27 The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and buffeted the house. And it collapsed and was completely ruined.”
(33,000 different denominations)

28 When Jesus finished these words, the crowds were astonished at his teaching, 29 for he taught them as one having authority, and not as their scribes*. *
(And Jesus gave this Infallibility to Peter and his successors and "The Gates of Hell will not prevail against it)

Regarding Joel Osteen:

[2 Timothy 4:3](http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=2 Timothy+4:3&version=NIV)
For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.

Conversely, if you preach what they want to hear, they will donate money to your ministry.

Regarding the keys:

“So we stand here and with open mouth stare heavenward and invent still other keys. Yet Christ says very clearly in Matthew 16:19 that He will give the keys to Peter. He does not say He has two kinds of keys, but He gives to Peter the keys He Himself has, and no others. It is as if He were saying: why are you staring heavenward in search of the keys? Do you not understand I gave them to Peter? They are indeed the keys of Heaven, but they are not found in Heaven. I left them on earth. Don’t look for them in Heaven or anywhere else except in Peter’s mouth where I have placed them. Peter’s mouth is My mouth, and his tongue is My key case. His office is My office, his binding and loosing are My binding and loosing.” (*Martin Luther, The Keys, in Conrad Bergendoff, ed. trans. Earl Beyer and Conrad Bergendoff, Luthers Works, vol. 40, Philadelphia: Fortress, 1958, p. 365-366.) *

Let’s look at the big picture.

While, as Catholics, we understand exactly what was happening and what Jesus was referring to literally. But, and there is a but…each of us were also given a wonderful gift of access to everything he speaks of through the name of Jesus. What Joel Osteen is talking about is totally different from what we normally understand that passage to represent. The concept is correct, the source passage if wrong. He should probably use a different bible verse, such as “Whatever you ask in my name…”

That’s so true! So many people blindly follow this guy… when he’s gone their Christian identities will be crushed… nobody else preaches his brand of Protestantism.

That is so true. And the Houston Compaq Center will go back to being a regular arena and conference center.

Herein lies the rub: Jesus gave the Keys to Peter, not to you & i!!!

"And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jona! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. 18 And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the powers of death shall not prevail against it. 19** I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”** 20 Then he strictly charged the disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ.(Mt 16:17-20 RSV)

And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. 19And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. 20Then charged he his disciples that they should tell no man that he was Jesus the Christ. (Mt 16:17-20 KJV)

These poor, misguided preachers cannot even read a simple passage of Sacred Scripture without totally distorting the words of Jesus Christ, our Lord & Savior!!

Where did Jesus say ‘I give the keys to every Tom, Dick & Harry?’. We cannot even find our own car keys?!

**Do you think Jesus would give everyone the “power” to loose & bind, NO WAY JOSE!!!
**
While Mr. Osteen sounds good & makes many people feel good for a little while, the Truth doesn’t always feel good. More often than not it really hurts! It requires selfless sacrifice & humility.

Jesus didn’t have a mega -church with expensive suits, makeup artists, Lear jets, limousines & Milion $$$ Mansions (Rev. Wright!!!) & millions of $$$$ in donations. He walked through the harsh desert, pausing often to pray, & He surely didn’t water down the Truth to try to be loved by everyone; He isn’t Oprah!!!

Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, Ora Pro Nobis Peccatoribus!
