The keys of the kingdom...

We know that Jesus is the long awaited Davidic king who’s “house and kingdom” (Jesus’ church, the house of the living God) - is “established forever,” (2 Samuel 7:12) - and that Jesus has supreme or plenary authority in heaven and earth (Matt 28:18) - and that the keys given to Peter represent a symbol for authority and responsibilities to be exercised within the house of God, by the keyholder. If Jesus was going to take the trouble to set up an office for Peter In His House which is to last forever, by giving Peter alone the keys of the kingdom of heaven, which denote an office of authority within Jesus’ house, then surely this position would naturally continue for the life of Jesus’ Church which is the “house and kingdom” of 2 Samuel 7 which “shall be established forever,” if in fact Jesus is the long awaited Davidic King, which all Christians believe? If not, what would be the point of establishing such an authoritative office if Jesus had no intention of seeing it last beyond Peter’s death? It would be one of the most anti-climactic events in the life of Jesus and the history of His Church.

“And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”
 
IMO, there would be no point, but some people believe that the authority died with Peter and the apostles. This mostly comes from anti-Catholics who do not want to follow the Pope so they say the authority died with Peter so the Pope has no authority over Christians. A lot of people are taught some pretty nasty things, such as “the Pope is the anti-Christ” so of course they don’t want to follow the Pope: they think he is evil.
